David De Gea’s contract extension could become a real headache for Manchester United as Mark Ogden of the Telegraph claims that Real Madrid are willing to end till the end of next season to sign the Spanish goalkeeper on a free transfer. De Gea has entered the final 18 months of his contract for the Old Trafford side after arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011 in a £18.3m deal.
The 24 year old has been in stunning form this season, bailing United out several times when the odds were stacked against their favour. It is believed that Los Galacticos are willing to wait till Iker Casillas ends his illustrious career for the reigning European Champions.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be happy to retain Casillas and second choice Keylor Navas as his goalkeeping options next season before making a move for De Gea. The report also states that Louis Van Gaal and other and senior figures are relaxed over De Gea’s contractual situation but any failure to tie the player down could lead to Real pouncing on the shot-stopper.
Ogden also states that De Gea is happy in Manchester but the lure of Real and the prospect of returning to his home city can lead to his exit. Moreover, his pop star girlfriend Edurne Garcia Almagro is also in the Spanish capital.
There were earlier suggestions that United could try top land Gareth Bale by offering DE Gea who is reportedly worth £35m. But Bale has played down reports on returning to the Premier League, “I can’t see myself at Manchester United. In an interview recently I was asked if I was happy in Madrid and I said that I was very happy here.”
“I have a long contract still to go, I am enjoying myself and we are winning trophies. I want to continue doing this at Real Madrid. I feel the support of the Bernabeu. I am going to continue working to show what I am capable of doing on the pitch and so as to win more trophies.”
