Wigan’s Valencia demands could reopen Real’s Pennant interest

If Real Madrid want to make Antonio Valencia their third big-money January signing, they may have to shell out £20m for the Wigan winger, according to the Daily Mail.

Yesterday, Valencia’s agent Diego Herrera was quoted as saying that a move to Real Madrid would be a dream for Valencia, with £16.6m mentioned as the magic number.

However, today’s reports indicate that Wigan could be holding out for an offer of 20m from Real if they are to sell Valencia. What’s a few million more when your January spending is already going to be well over the 50m mark, right?

What happens with the Valencia situation could directly affect where Jermaine Pennant is going in January. As surprising as Real Madrid’s initial interest in Pennant was, they could move for him once again if their move for Valencia falls through.

Pennant would certainly be a lot cheaper than Valencia, and like Valencia, he’d also be eligible for the Champions League, as none of his four appearances this season have come in Europe.

However, if Real do end up signing Valencia, then Steve Bruce could move for Pennant as an inexpensive replacement for the Ecuadorian. Pennant may prefer Madrid, but if it’s regular football he wants, his chances of that might be better at Wigan.
