Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has finally committed his future at the club by signing a three-and-a-half year contract ending wide speculations about his future.
The 23-year-old who had less than six months remaining on his contract has put pen to paper today completing all the necessary formalities.
Walcott rejected a five year contract worth £75,000 a week in August and looked like he would move elsewhere if his terms and conditions were not met. The England international demanded much better salary and assurance of regular games in his preferred central striker position which Arsenal refused to comply to his wishes then.
Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager refused to break the wage structure at the club while the Frenchman exacerbated the situation by making strident criticism of the player’s attitude demanding commitment and loyalty.
The former Southampton player was frustrated with Wenger’s treatment in the beginning as he was mainly used as substitutes. While, Arsenal not only failed to mount a serious title challenge yet again but there is a growing feeling within the supporters that the North London club might not finish in top four this season.
Arsenal have trudged into the path of inconsistency while Walcott continued to dazzle (scored 14 goals and becoming the club’s top scorer) that left the Gunners with limited choice, rather to hand him his desired contract.
According to reports from BBC, Arsenal have offered him a five-year contract worth £90,000 while the player wanted a three-and-a half-year deal with pay package over £100,000 per week.
The news would bring a huge sigh of relief for all the Arsenal fans who wanted a positive solution to his situation. The club have already seen the departures of top names in recent past like Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri et al and it would have given a wrong signal had Walcott been left to move elsewhere for nothing in the summer.
