According to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are set to finally meet Middlesbrough’s valuation of midfielder Stewart Downing and make a £15m cash offer to snare the England man in January.
Spurs have been after Downing for quite a while, and Boro have stuck to their guns all the same. Recently, an offer that included Gareth Bale was mentioned, but even though Bale could vie to be Downing’s replacement on the left, it appears that Boro are only interested in getting the cash windfall from their star man.
I do think it’s a lot to shell out for Downing, but if they want him, they’ll have to pony up the pounds to do get him. Money’s certainly not an issue for Spurs, but Downing will certainly have to prove his worth in short order.
The £15m would allow Gareth Southgate to have more than enough funds for necessary January purchases, which could include Crystal Palace midfielder Ben Watson. The bottom half of the table is full of clubs who’ll be busy in January, and some of them will be bidding for the same players, so it won’t hurt to have plenty of money in the coffers for the sake of outbidding survival rivals.
