South Africa 0-3 Uruguay
2010 FIFA World Cup
16 June 2010
Uruguay would get a crucial win with a strong performance from striker Diego Forlan as South African’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stage took a major hit.
Forlan would give Uruguay the lead in the 24th minute with a shot that deflected slightly off a defender and then off the crossbar to make it 0-1. It was a deserving goal as Uruguay were clearly the better side throughout the match. The match would remain 0-1 until late in the second half.
A penalty kick was given to Uruguay as the South Africa goalkeeper was given a red card. Diego Forlan stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted in the 80th minute to make it 2-0. The second goal sealed the three points for Uruguay but they weren’t finished. They would add one more in stoppage time as Alvaro Pereira was unmarked in the box after receiving a cross.
The loss probably ends South Africa’s realistic chances of moving onto the next round as they probably need at the least a win against France in their last group stage match. Uruguay now lead Group A with four points.
