Slovenia 0-1 England
2010 FIFA World Cup
23 June 2010
It wasn’t a dominating or particularly impressive performance but England did get a 1-0 win over Slovenia to advance out of the group stage.
The goal for England would come from Jermain Defoe in the 23rd minute. Defoe replaced Emile Heskey in the starting line-up and scored with a volley from a cross that deflected off the goalkeeper’s hands. It proved to be enough for the Three Lions who held on for the rest of the match for the victory.
Both sides would get chances after the Defoe goal but neither would convert. England were clearly the betterside and looked much better from the Algeria match. They still are struggling to score goals and really should have won the match but a few goals.
England places second in Group C with the win and will face the winner of Group D. Slovenia is knocked out of the tournament but showed a lot of fight by beating Algeria and getting a draw against the USA.
