Slovakia 3-2 Italy – Video Highlights
2010 FIFA World Cup
24 June 2010
Slovakia would upset the defending champions and send them out of the tournament with a 3-2 victory.
The Slovakia would grab a 2-0 lead in the match as Robert Vittek scored goals in the 25th minute and 73rd minute. Italy would need a draw to advance and did respond in the final few minutes. Antonio Di Natale cut the lead in half with a 83rd minute goal as the Italians still had some hope.
Unfortunately for the Azzurri, Slovakia would score the next goal as Kami Kopunek made it 3-1 in the 89th minute. Italy would get one more back in stoppage time with a goal from Fabio Quagliarella but it was not enough. The loss ends Italy’s run in the 2010 World Cup as they finished last in the group.
It’s a great victory for Slovakia and they will now move into the round of 16 with a lot of confidence. Italy will be facing some tough questions now and need to rebuild as many of their top players are getting older and likely to retire from international competition.
