Robin van Persie has scored 18 goals in the 22 Premier League games he has played. With that, Manchester United have moved nine points clear of any title challengers. Manchester City and Chelsea linger behind with 53 and 46 points respectively.
The former Arsenal captain is definitely a crucial factor in United’s dominance in England this season. But van Persie has attributed the main reason for the club’s success to their first team coach, Rene Meulensteen.
Persie has pointed out the attention to detail in the training exercises of his fellow Dutchman, Meulensteen.
Robin van Persie was quoted in The Telegraph:
“The way he [Meulensteen] trains is exceptional.
“He is truly one of the best coaches in the world. I have had a lot of good trainers, but it’s the way he prepares our team for games.
“Every match is different, so every training session in the build-up to games is unique. We know exactly what to expect and he wins points for us through his training.
“We’ve won a lot of games by the odd goal and they are point winners, which we train for.
“For instance, against Chelsea, I scored after a low cross from Antonio Valencia on the right. It might seem a fluke, but the whole week before the game was spent working on that move.
“Another example is my goal against Wigan, when I cut the ball inside and shot with my right foot. Again this situation, we trained on.”
Speaking to the Dutch TV NOS, Robin van Persie claimed that he has become a better player since leaving London. According to the stats from Castrol Football Rankings, his statement is clearly justified.
He has climbed up two places to fourth on the Castrol rankings. Lionel Messi tops the list followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, obviously. RVP’s compatriot Arjen Robben is ranked third and Persie is not too far behind him.
If Persie can keep up his performances for the rest of the season, he can very well become the best player after Ronaldo and Messi.
Robin van Persie told NOS:
“Training is really good. It’s a very pleasant environment to work in. Every day I work on new things. I become alert to small details that make me better.
“I go into work every day whistling. From the first day, they have made me feel welcome, the boys made me feel right at home.
“I feel better and fitter. In the last week, I played Wednesday and Saturday. In those games I played with ease.”
Robin van Persie is currently with the Netherlands squad in Amsterdam, preparing to face Italy in an international friendly game. United fans are hoping that he returns to Manchester unharmed as the big clash against Real Madrid in the first knockout round of the Champions League is next week.
