Ascot Gold Cup clues this Wednesday as some of the top staying flat horses line-up for the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes (3.35) at Ascot racecourse. We’ve seven horses entered that include the Aidan O’Brien-trained Wordsworth, who will be looking to give the Ballydoyle trainer his first win in this race. Andy Newton takes a look at the race in more detail and gives you the key Sagaro Stakes trends.

Sagaro Stakes Tips
Trainer Aidan O’Brien Looking For His First Sagaro Stakes Win
Believe it, or not – trainer Aidan O’Brien has never won the Sagaro Stakes. But he’s got a leading chance this year to break that duck with Wordsworth @ 2/1 with LiveScore Bet. Tis son of Galileo was a recent winner at Gowran Park so can be expected to have an advantage over the others having had a recent run.
That was his second career win from 9 runs and his seventh top three finish. He’s run well at Group 1 & 2 level in the past too and acts well on this quicker ground. Ryan Moore also rides (was on last time) so it’s hard to crab his chance – certainly one for the shortlist, but the only niggle based on the trends is that only 4 of the last 19 past winners came here off the back of a win.
Irish Mare Princess Zoe Heads To Ascot
Another Irish raider and the oldest runner in the field – Princess Zoe @ 6/1 with LiveScore Bet. – also comes over from the Emerald Isle. She gets a small mares’ allowance and is the second highest-rated in the field at 113, so is another player.
She ran well in top staying flat races last season too and was runner-up in the Ascot Gold Cup here at the Royal Meeting in June. The niggel with her is that she’s now seven races without a win.
Past Winner Nayef Road Is Back For More
Nayef Road @ 9/1 with LiveScore Bet. won this race in 2020 and will be trying to win back his crown after also running a close third here 12 months ago. He was only beaten 1 1/2 lengths by the mighty Stradivarius last season too so this front-runner can be expected to make another bold bid.
With just the one win (Listed grade) from his last 13 outings, this Mark Johnston runner has become a tad hard to win with though.
Tashkhan The Top-rated In The Field
The one the others seem to have to aim at though – based on the ratings – is the Brian Ellison runner – TASHKHAN @ 5/1 with LiveScore Bet. This 4 year-old took a big step forward last season and rounded off a top campaign with a close second to Trueshan in the Long Distance Cup here on Champions Day.
He’s a horse that acts on any ground and at the age of just 4 years-old can also be expected to still have more improvement to come. Yes, the 193-day break is a small worry, but looking back through his form he’s won off layoffs in the past, which eases the concern a bit.
Andy Newton’s Sagaro Stakes Verdict
Course winners Quickthorn, Calling The Wind and Ememy make up the seven runners in the race and certainly can’t be ruled out, but the ratings do suggest they’ve got a small bit to find with Wordsworth, Princess Zoe and TASHKHAN @ 5/1 with LiveScore Bet.
The Irish raiders are very much respected and the race fit Wordsworth can go close, but I just feel that if Trueshan was in this race (ground is not soft enough) he’d be the clear favourite. So, with Tashkhan running that horse to 1 1/2 lengths last time here in October is form that sets a fair standard and, therefore, this Brian Ellison runner gets the nod based on that.
