The main race on day two (Wednesday 27th April) of the 2022 Punchestown Festival is the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup (5:55pm) and we look set for another ‘must-see’ contest with last year’s hero – Clan Des Obeaux – back for more and flying the flag for the UK trainers. He takes on eight big Irish-trained runners that include the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner – Minella Indo – and this year’s Ryanair Chase victor – Allaho. Plus, you can snap up a £20 free bet to use on the Punchestown Gold Cup on Wednesday with LiveScore Bet – (more below).

Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup Tips
A top race in prospect with nine big names in the Grade One staying chase division locking horns.
Clan Des Obeaux, for the Paul Nicholls yard, is the only UK challenger, but he’s a big one! He’s the current champ of this race after beating Al Boum Photo by 1 1/2 lengths 12 months ago. He comes here off the back of another good win in the Betway Bowl at Aintree too and this 10 year-old has to be considered.
However, 13 of the last 18 (72%) winners were aged 8 or younger, so this is a fair trend against the likes of Clan Des Obeaux, plus also the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner – Minella Indo (9), this year’s King George hero Toronado Flyer (9), the former Gold Cup winner – Al Boum Photo (10) – and the 2019 winner of this race – Kemboy (10).
Of those left that tick the age trend are Galvin (8), Fakir D’oudairies (7), Janidil (8) and the Willie Mullins-trained ALLAHO. Of that bunch, I just felt that Galvin got a bit outpaced at a crucial stage in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham last time, so the drop back in trip and on this similar quicker ground might not be ideal.
He’s also taking on proven winners over 2m4f that will probably have a bit too much pace for him and despite stamina being his big asset, you feel that the race might just get away from him before his staying power kicks in.
Fakir D’oudiries was a nice winner over 2m4f in the Marsh Chase last time at Aintree and looks worth another crack up in trip, being he’s still only 7. But he did seem to get tired in this race 12 months ago (3rd), when beaten just over 18 lengths. So, at the top level his stamina is still very much in question.
Janidil fell when looking to have a big chance at Fairyhouse last time but is another that has a bit to prove over this trip – he’s tried 3m+ three times and finished third of worse each time. He’s a consistent staying chaser though with 7 top three finishes from 10 runs, but with only one win from his last 9 races, that would be another worry.
So, that leaves us with the Willie Mullins-trained ALLAHO @ 11/8 with LiveScore Bet to take this and give his trainer his fifth win in the race since 2013.
We last saw this 8 year-old winning the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham for a second time and even though he’s probably a better horse over that 2m 4 1/2f trip, has won over 3m as a hurdler.
He’s also a close third in the 2020 RSA Chase over 3m, plus is an older and stronger horse now that looks worthy of another crack up in trip. This Cheveley Park-owned 8 year-old has won all three starts this season and 5 of his last 6 – with his only defeat in that run coming over 2m here to Chacun Pour Soi in the Champion Chase at this meeting last year. The better ground here should also help him see out the trip.
Of the rest, I think the sole UK raider and last year’s winner CLAN DES OBEAUX @ 7/1 with LiveScore Bet can do best of the rest, but might have a bit to do to topple the younger legs of Allaho.
