As we move into day two at the Punchestown Festival we’ve another eight races to take in that are spearheaded by the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup (5.55) – a race where we’ve got last year’s winner – Clan Des Obeaux – taking on eight top class Irish-trained chasers in what looks a race not to be missed. Andy Newton gives you his Punchestown tips and best bets on the day.

Punchestown Festival Tips: Day Two, Wednesday 27th April 2022
3:40 – Adare Manor Opportunity Series Final Handicap Hurdle (4yo+ 95-123) 2m4f RTV
A super tricky race to get going on day two. Willie Mullins has Dads Lad and Rock Rock in the race, while the Gordon Elliott yard have Humble Glory – all three are sure to be popular. The recent winners in the field are Midnight It Is, Outback Flyer and Life In The Park, while it’s interesting that the David Pipe yard send over Thanksforthehelp.
But with the Jessie Harrington camp winning this 12 months ago and in 2017 – a chance is taken in their two runners – EDISON KENT (e/w) @ 20/1 with Boylesports and GUIRI @ 9/1 with Boylesports , who actually won this last year and is only 6lbs higher, but 4lbs of that is offset with the jockey’s claim.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
4:15 – Connolly’s RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Hurdle Series Final (4yo+) 2m4f RTE2
Some promising sorts on show here but it’s hard to get away from the Willie Mullins-trained GLENGOULY @ 9/2 with Boylesports , who comes here on tha three-timer. He was last seen at Leopardstown when beating another runner here – Sam’s Choice – by 3/4 of a length and I think he can uphold that form despite being 7lbs worse off.
I A Connect, The Road To Fame and Winding River are others to note, but the other one to have on your radar is FREEDOM TO DREAM @ 7/4 with Boylesports . This 7 year-old is a past course winner and also comes from last year’s winning yard of Peter Fahey. A recent fourth in the Martin Pipe Hurdle at Cheltenham should have him spot on for this.
4:45 – Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle (4yo+) 2m4f RTE2
Another good race for the Willie Mullins yard – they’ve landed three of the last four – and have a decent hand again with Gibraltar, Classic Getaway and the Paul Townend-ridden Ganapathi in the race.
But it’s also a race the Jessie Harrington yard like to do well in, having won 3 of the last six and the prize 12 months ago too. They run the only proven CD winner in the field – CROSSHILL (e/w) @ 15/2 with Boylesports . This 7 year-old should be more at home back in trip after finding 2m5f and 2m7f too far the last twice, but prior to that was a good second at Thurles on better ground and on that showing would have a chance.
The other pick is the Nicky Henderson-trained – FILS D’ OUDAIRIES @ 6/4 with Boylesports – who ran a blinder at Aintree last time (2nd). He stays this 2m4f trip well and with just four runs over hurdles looks a typical Henderson runner that will have more in the locker – Nico de Boinville – comes over for the ride too.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
5:20 – Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+) 3m RTE2
Yet another good race for the Willie Mullins yard – winning it five times since 2012. With four runners again this year they clearly mean business again too – Ramillies, Bronn, Minella Cocooner and The Nice Guy.
Of that bunch, the last two named look their main hopes with the unbeaten THE NICE GUY @ 2/1 with Boylesports edging it after seeing off his stablemate at Cheltenham last time in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. There was 5 lengths between them that day and on the same terms The Nice Guy is taken to maintain that form.
Hollow Games, Bronn and Minella Crooner are others to respect, but the main danger can come from JOURNEY WITH ME @ 15/2 with Boylesports , who fell when probably booked for third behind Sir Gerhard in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last time.
5:55 – Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup (Grade 1) (5yo+) 3m RTE2
A stellar cast line up for the Gold Cup that include last year’s winner – Clan Des Obeaux, the 2019 winner – Kemboy – plus King George winner – Tornado Flyer, and the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner – Minella Indo.
Add in Galvin, two-time Cheltenaham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo and recent Aintree winner – Fakir D’oudairies – then you really can make a case for plenty.
However, it’s the recent Ryanair Chase winner at Cheltenham – ALLAHO @ 11/8 with Boylesports – that gets the verdict. This Willie Mullins-trained 8 year-old beat another runner here in Janidil by 14 length the last day and saw off Fakir D’oudaries by 12 lengths the time before at Thurles.
Yes, the step up in trip here to 3m will be the main reason why punters will want to take him on. But he’s won over this trip over hurdles and was a fair third in the 2020 RSA Chase over this trip too. He’s an older horse now too, so looks well worth a crack over this longer trip again. Plus, you can see all the key Punchestown Gold Cup trends here.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
6:30 – Race & Stay At Punchestown Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Grade 1) (4-7yo) 2m½f RTE2
American Mike (2nd) and Facile Vega (1st) fought it out in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival and it’s hard to see anything else getting involved. The Willie Mullins runner – FACILE VEGA @ 1/2 with Boylesports – won that race by just under 4 lengths and looks another very exciting prospect for the Willie Mullins yard.
We can expect him to go hurdling next year too but can take this on only his fourth career start and remain unbeaten.
7:05 – OMC Claims Handicap Chase (Grade A) (5yo+) 2m5f RTE2
Another race with a lot of Mullins runners – Ciel De Niege – looks his main hope but he also runs Egality Mans, Royal Rendezvous and Annamix.
But a chance is taken on CAVALRY MASTER (e/w) @ 12/1 with Boylesports here and last year’s winner – FOXY JACKS (e/w) @ 8/1 with Boylesports . The former is a proven course winner for the Henry De Bromhead yard that has been freshened up with 4 months off. He won four novice chases in a row last summer so loves the better ground and it’s clear connections have been waiting for just that.
Foxy Jacks took this last season and despite being rated 10lbs higher has a 7lb claimer on to offset much of that. Yes, he fell heavily in the Topham Chase last time but was running well at the time and was also going easily until making some mistakes in the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
7:45 – Weatherbys General Stud Book Irish EBF Mares Flat Race (Grade 3) (4-7yo) 2m½f RTV
Just the one past running of this race and that went to the Willie Mullins yard with Grangee. They’ve got Eabha Grace, Nikini, Pink In The Park and True Light in the race this year.
Lily Du Berlais won the Mares NH Flat race at the Dublin Racing Festival in Feb – beating Battling Bessie by a nose so there shouldn’t be much between them again here.
But a chance is taken on the Michael Hourigan runner – DORAN’S WEIR @ 4/1 with Boylesports – who has won two of her last three and caught the eye when winning well at Fairyhouse last time when beating the already mentioned Pink In The Park.
