Magic Daze (3/1), Klassical Dream (11/10) and Lilith (8/1) were top winners for Andy Newton at Punchestown yesterday.
Punchestown Festival Tips: Day Four, Friday 29th April 2022
3:40- Stanley Asphalt Hunters Chase for the Bishopscourt Cup (4yo+) 2m5f RTV
The opening race on day four at the Punchestown Festival looks a bit of a shootout between Alpha Male and AN DROICHEAD GORM @ 6/4 with Boylesports for this Hunters Chase. The former is a proven course winner and won this race in 2018, but is now 11 and will have to deal with some younger legs (9) in An Droichead Gorm.
This Pointer was a good winner too last time out so heads here full of confidence and with that also coming off a 298-day break can be expected to have come on for it as well. The horse will also benefit from a 7lbs claimer on his back, whereas Alpha Male will be running off the normal weight.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
4:15 – EMS Copiers Novice Handicap Chase (Grade A) (5yo+) 2m5f RTE2
Plenty of chances here, including course winner French Dynamite, plus Gevrey, Rightplacerightime, Gabbys Cross, Birchdale and Busselton, but it’s hard to ignore the Willie Mullins record in this race – he’s won 5 of the last 6 renewals.
Yes, he’s mob-handed this year with five runners, but Blue Sari and FIGHTER ALLEN @ 3/1 with Boylesports look his main players. Of that pair, I’m happy to side with the Paul Townend-ridden Fighter Allen, who has won two of this last three and is a proven course winner. He kept on well to win over 2m2f last time at Thurles so the step up in trip to 2m5f also looks a good move having won over 2m4f in the past too.
4:50 – Hanlon Concrete Irish EBF Glencarraig Lady Francis Flood Mares Chase (Grade 2) (5yo+) 2m5f RTE2
Another ‘shootout’ style race with Scarlet And Dove and Elimay looking the main players. The former is rated 5lbs inferior to Elimay but was only 1/2 a length behind that mare at Cheltenham last time out and shouldn’t be a lot between them again.
But with Scarlet And Dove having no wins in her last 6 races, then ELIMAY @ 8/11 with Boylesports looks the more reliable and can uphold that form here, plus is also a proven course winner. Yes, she did make hard work of it last time at Cheltenham but stayed on well in the end and so slightly longer trip here will help.
5:25 – Paddy Power Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+) 2m RTE2
Let’s be honest, even though we’ve got the current Champion Hurdler – HONEYSUCKLE @ 2/11 with Boylesports– on show here, it’s a poor renewal and barring accidents the Hendry De Bromhead runner should be making it 16 straight wins here. She took the race 12 months ago in great fashion and not only is she the clear top-rated in the field but also gets the mares’ allowance (7lbs) again.
Saint Roi, who was fourth in the Champion Hurdle last time, and Teahupoo look the most likely to fight it out for second.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
6:00 – Alanna Homes Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+) 2m3½f RTE2
A cracking race in prospect here, despite only 6 runners. County Hurdle winner – STATE MAN @ Evs with Boylesports – will be popular for the Willie Mullins yard having run on well there to suggest the step up to 2m3f will be perfect – plus the yard have won this race 5 times since 2013. He gets the call.
He’ll face a stern test though from recent Aintree winner – Three Stripe Life and Flame Bearer, while Mullins also has the only proven course winner in the field – Kilcruit – as a back-up. But, with jockey Paul Townend picking State Man to ride, this hint should be taken.
6:35 – Irish Daily Star Champion Hunters Chase (4yo+) 3m RTE2
Billaway, who was second in this race last year, needed every yard of the 3m2 1/2f trip last time to land the Foxhunters’ Chase at Cheltenham so the drop back to 3m here is the small worry.
Dorking Cock and Solomn Grundy have claims, but the pick is the Barry O’Neill-ridden VAUCELET @ Evs with Boylesports, who is 3 years younger than Billaway at 7 years-old and has been super-impressive recently by winning a Point last month and then a Hunters’ Chase at Fairyhouse a few weeks ago by 20 lengths.
7:10 – SalesSense International Novice Hurdle (4yo+) 2m RTV
Yet another race the Willie Mullins yard have farmed in recent years – winning it 6 times since 2013 and three times in the last four.
They’ve got another big hand this year wirh four runners, but it’s Bring On The Night and the Paul Townend-ridden EL FABIOLO @ 4/7 with Boylesports, that stands out from his quartet. The last-named ran a blinder at Aintree last time to only go down a neck to Jonbon and a repeat of that run – with the first two pulling 19 lengths clear of the rest – will make him hard to beat.
7:45 – Avison Young INH Flat Race (5-7yo) 2m2f RTV
Tricky NH Flat race to end. Willie Mullins has a leading chance with Don Chalant in the race, who has finished second the last twice at Navan.
UK handler – Harry Fry – won this in 2014 so it’s interesting he sends over Great Name That, plus it also catches the eye that Jamie Codd is riding the Colm Murphy-trained Mister Suntan.
Cool Survivor and O’Moore Park are others to note, but a chance is taken on GOLDEN WONDER’S (e/w) @ 11/2 with Boylesports, with leading jockey in these races – Derek O’Connor – getting the leg-up. O’Connor has won this race twice since 2018 and three times since 2014, plus he teamed up with trainer Martin Brassil in 2019 to land the spoils.
He rides again for Brassil here and this 6 year-old took a big step forward last time when a fine second at Leopardstown in a similar race. He’s had another 2 months to get over that run and with some more improvement can get in the shake-up.
Boylesports Special Offer – Money back if your horse is 2nd to the SP Fav (max refund £20). Applies to singles and win part of e/w bets in horses races in UK/Ire with 5 or more runners in. (Ts&C’s apply)
