Jackies Warrior the Breeders Cup Sprint favorite
Only two three-year-olds have won this race since 2005, yet oddsmakers like the chances of the younger generation. JACKIES WARRIOR is their favorite after two impressive Grade 2 wins over this distance either side of victory at the highest level over further.
A colt by Maclean’s Music, he was a smart juvenile last season. With three Grade 1 victories from five starts in elite company, Jackies Warrior represents the Steve Asmussen barn that won this race in 2019 with Mitole. There are two ways of looking at this favorite.
The first is that his proven stamina can actually be an asset here. Up to a mile, Jackies Warrior hasn’t really put a foot wrong. He did fail to make the show in the Breeders Cup Juvenile when favorite at Keeneland 12 months ago, however. Sprinting may be his forte instead.
On the other hand, since dropping back in distance, those two Grade 2 successes came at very short prices. Last time out, he was returned at 1.05 on some offshore sportsbooks, so the opposition wasn’t up to much. The Breeders Cup Sprint should be much deeper.

There’s something of a Del Mar track specialist against the favorite in DR SCHIVEL, who is a perfect three from three here. He moved barns from Luis Mendez to Mark Glatt over the summer, yet the change of trainer hasn’t done any harm at all. Dr Schivel is a three-year-old Violence colt that has won his last five starts.
They include the Del Mar Futurity on his final juvenile run and the Bing Crosby over the Breeders Cup Sprint course and distance. Dr Schivel followed-up on success in the latter with victory in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. He had last year’s runner-up in this, C Z Rocket, over three lengths behind him back in third.
It is a crucial piece of collateral form. Flavien Prat is a perfect five from five on Dr Schivel in the saddle, so forecast Breeders Cup Sprint odds may be big in relation to the favorite. He looks the one most likely to serve it up to Jackies Warrior in the California sun.

Following Sea has something to find with favorite
Todd Pletcher won this way back in 2004 and FOLLOWING SEA has work to do to reverse form with the market leader. The son of 2015 Breeders Cup Sprint hero Runhappy has nine lengths to find on Jackies Warrior from their Saratoga showdown off less favorable terms.
Handicappers may suggest the inside draw in gate number 1 can help close the gap. However, that alone isn’t going to be enough as Jackie Warrior enjoys the adjacent post position. Of the three three-year-olds competing, Following Sea has the most to prove here.
While he did come out and win a Grade 2 impressively at Belmont Park last time out, all that does is underscore the form with Jackies Warrior. For those bettors wagering on the show, it may instead pay to look elsewhere. Older horses have claims of hitting the frame, especially with the youngsters sporting that poor record.
Special Reserve among Breeders Cup Sprint picks to show
Mike Maker is no stranger to success at the World Championships, so SPECIAL RESERVE may be best of the rest. A five-year-old Midshipman gelding, he was held just half-a-length in the Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga on his penultimate start. Special Reserve now meets the winner, Lexitonian, off level weights.
He then went one better in the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland, beating another re-opposing rival in Aloha West by a neck. Special Reserve must step up on that here, but has been lightly-raced for his age. Irad Ortiz, who rode last year’s winner Whitmore, is back on board.
Joel Rosario deserting Special Reserve for the ride on Jackies Warrior is a shame, but understandable. However, with some oddsmakers overseas putting him in at a double figure price for the win, that only makes him value to show. Breeders Cup Sprint picks suggest Special Reserve can have a say in the finish.
