Letruska favorite for fillies and mares dirt race
Oddsmakers have a clear favorite for this Grade 1 contest in LETRUSKA. Trained by Fausto Gutierrez, this five-year-old Super Saver mare has suffered just one defeat in her previous eight starts over the last year. Letruska went through the grades over the winter and spring, enjoying a breakthrough win at the highest level in the Apple Blossom Handicap.
Her nose defeat of two-time Breeders Cup Distaff winner Monomoy Girl at Oaklawn Park in April punched her ticket here. Letruska has since followed-up with three Grade 1 stakes successes: the Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park, the Personal Ensign at Saratoga and the Spinster at Keeneland.
That sets a clear and obvious form standard which online betting sites and sportsbooks can’t ignore. Letruska’s only loss came by a head under a penalty against re-opposing rival Shedaresthedevil, but they meet again off level terms now. The market has the right favorite, so expectations are Letruska justifies her Breeders Cup Distaff odds and wins this.

Malathaat may be pick of 3yo bunch
Older fillies and mares have produced more Breeders Cup Distaff winners over the years, yet three-year-olds do get weight for age. Of the trio representing the younger generation, MALATHAAT is the proven performer and runs for Todd Pletcher. That barn has two previous wins in this race.
Malathaat, a daughter of 2007 Breeders Cup Classic hero Curlin, has three Grade 1 wins on her resume. She is also six from seven on the track. Her trio of elite successes began in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland. Malathaat then followed-up in the Kentucky Oaks, but went down fighting by a head in the American Oaks.
She bounced back from that narrow defeat last time out, however, with Alabama Stakes success at Saratoga. On that evidence, Malathaat has nothing to fear from re-opposing runner-up Clairiere, a subsequent Grade 1 winner herself. This is a first start for her against older fillies and mares, but she should be involved in the finish.

Private Mission and Shedaresthedevil value Breeders Cup Distaff picks
The other three-year-old in the line-up is PRIVATE MISSION. A daughter of Into Mischief representing California trainer Bob Baffert, she has a progressive profile. Private Mission routed her rivals here at Del Mar in a Grade 3 at the end of August. Her barn may have had an eye on returning for this then.
Private Mission stepped up into Grade 2 company against her elders last time out. As she ran on well for another easy success, she is well worth a shot at the highest level. It isn’t a stretch by any means to see Private Mission making the show, so she is definitely one of the Breeders Cup Distaff picks for bettors to consider at better odds.

SHEDARESTHEDEVIL, as noted above, is the only filly to beat the favorite in the last 12 months. Despite meeting Letruska off worse terms here, the four-year-old Steve Asmussen filly represents the same barn as Monomoy Girl. Shedaresthedevil had no answer in the Ogden Phipps Stakes, but has won again at the highest level since.
That came here in the Clement L Hirsch Stakes back in August. Shedaresthedevil has experience of the track just like Private Mission, then. She also cashed in on a drop in grade for her prep run at Churchill Downs. While it is hard to see Shedaresthedevil defeating Letruska off level weights, making the show could still happen.
