Get the lowdown on 2021 Breeders Cup Dirt Mile picks from top handicappers. The Del Mar dirt is the place to be with many owners and trainers California dreaming of success at the World Championships. This race sponsored by Big Ass Fans is the third of nine Grade 1s on Saturday, November 6 (4:19 EDT).
This year’s Breeders Cup Classic favorite Knicks Go won the Dirt Mile race at the meet 12 months ago. Crowning his successor is the build-up to the centerpiece of the Championships is what’s going on here. Three-year-olds only have four wins since the inauguration of this in 2007, but that doesn’t stop oddsmakers putting one at the head of the market! Strong case that Life Is Good
Todd Pletcher may never get a better chance of winning this race than with LIFE IS GOOD. The sole three-year-old in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile this time gets weight for age all-round. A colt by Into Mischief, he has won three of his four starts this season.
Life Is Good twice beat subsequent Kentucky Derby hero Medina Spirit in Triple Crown trials at Santa Anita earlier in the year. He then left the Bob Baffert barn for Pletcher, but is back in California for a crack at this.
Only Jackies Warrior, the hot favorite for the Breeders Cup Sprint at this meet, proved too much for Life Is Good over seven furlongs at Saratoga. He has since put that neck defeat behind him with victory in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park.
While Life Is Good was long odds-on with oddsmakers overseas last time out, this has been a long-term target. His back form from earlier in the campaign with a Kentucky Derby winner means he can’t be anything other than favorite here. It may be an obvious choice, but most Breeders Cup Dirt Mile picks are Life Is Good.

Silver State pick of Asmussen pair
Nine years ago, Steve Asmussen won this with Tapizar. He runs two in the race this time and SILVER STATE is the barn’s main hope. A four-year-old Hard Spun colt, he won the Oaklawn and Metropolitan Handicaps earlier in the season.
Silver State capitalized on the weight he got from Breeders Cup Classic favorite and last year’s Dirt Mile hero Knicks Go in the latter. Off level terms with Brad Cox’s star in the Whitney Stakes, however, he was firmly put in his place.
Although far from disgraced in defeat at Saratoga, a head loss when dropped to Listed level at Parx is a concern. Silver State was a hot favorite that last day and couldn’t give weight away to Pletcher’s Mind Control.
He concedes some to another from that barn here in Life Is Good. Asmussen also runs Snapper Sinclair, who has plenty to find at this level. Silver State remains unproven outside of graded handicaps, so must improve on recent efforts here.
Ginobili worth a bet in Breeders Cup Dirt Mile
Richard Baltas has had a decent season and GINOBILI boasts three wins from four starts at Del Mar on his resume. The four-year-old Munnings gelding beat subsequent Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P. as a juvenile here.
It has taken Ginobili a bit of time to build on that early promise. After shaping as if needing the run after almost 500 days off the track on his return at Santa Anita, he was really impressive in a claimer at this track.
Ginobili followed-up in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes here when last in action. He was home almost two lengths in front of last year’s Breeders Cup Sprint second C Z Rocket. Re-opposing rival Eight Rings was further down the field in fourth.
There shouldn’t be anything for Ginobili to fear from that one despite stepping back to a mile here. With such a lightly-raced profile, he has to be among Breeders Cup Dirt Mile picks for the show here. The race lacks depth on paper, as prices on offshore sportsbooks suggest, with Life Is Good the one they all have to beat.
