The United States and Mexico renew their heated rivalry on Wednesday August 12th in CONCACAF 2010 World Cup Qualifying at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Live coverage of the match will begin at 2:30 PM local time (8:30 PM GMT).
Match Preview
The two teams played last month in the final of the Gold Cup but the match will be under very different circumstances. The US has a new roster with many experienced players and only a few who played in the Gold Cup. Headlining the USA is Landon Donovan who’s been in great form this season for club and country. The back four is centered by two experienced and reliable players, Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra while the midfield is full of players in the top European leagues.
Mexico on the other hand has a combination of players from the Primera Division and overseas. Giovani Dos Santos and Carlos Vela ran circles against the USA defense in the Gold Cup Final and are rising stars for that National Team. Veteran Cuauhtemoc Blanco is a skilled playmaker who could provide a spark as a second half substitute. Overall both teams have experienced and solid rosters that should make for an entertaining match.
The Americans have never won at the Azteca and have only managed one draw. The heat, altitude, and massive home crowds (over 100,000) make it a huge home field advantage for Mexico who are looking to move up in the World Cup standings. Can the Americans finally pull off a victory in Mexico? Will the embarassment of the 5-0 loss in the Gold Cup be motivation to pull off their first win at the Azteca? It’s going to be difficult for the USA to win but this team showed in the Confederations Cup they have experience and the talent to compete with the top nations. Mexico will be up for the match and it should be a close one that ultimately ends in a draw.
