Manchester United are set to reignite their interest in Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, despite reports that the Portuguese club are unwilling to sell their prized asset in the summer transfer window.
Gaitan enjoyed arguably his best campaign last season helping the Lisbon club reach the Europa League final while narrowly missing out on the Portuguese Liga.
The 25-year-old is happy to continue his career at Benfica, at least for another season, but according to reports from talkSPORT, the South American may be tempted by a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs.
New Manchester United manager David Moyes has been a long term admirer of the dazzling Barcelona play maker Thiago Alcantara and is reportedly putting together a substantial package in order to lure the La Masia graduate to Old Trafford this summer.
Moyes, who inherited a title winning squad from his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, believes that the team’s midfield could do with some strengthening, especially now that club legend Paul Scholes has finally decided to call it a day.
The U21 Spanish international has been on United’s radar since the end of last season. However, speculation has been rife for the past few days, that the former Everton manager is close to completing a deal for Thiago, who will be his second signing of the season after South American youngster Guillermo Varela.
Images have been doing rounds of Thiago with his match ball from the U21 European Championships final, which had a message, written on it in Spanish, from Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea saying “See you in Manchester”, has fueled further speculation.
Thiago Alcantara is believed to have a release clause of €18m in his contract, and despite the cub’s wishes to keep hold of one of their most prized assets, the young Spaniard is keen to move due to lack of regular football at the Camp Nou.
