Manchester United will press ahead with the plans to sign Bayern Munich’s world class midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, as Louis van Gaal identifies him as the leading midfield target this summer.
The 29-year-old, who would cost around £25m, has entered the final two years of his contract at Bayern. According to the reliable James Ducker of The Times, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola is prepared to part company with the world-class central midfielder, who doesn’t enjoy a cordial relationship with the Spaniard and is willing to leave the club he joined as a 13-year-old.
Louis van Gaal feels immediate surgery is required to solve the defensive crisis at Manchester United, following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand – the Dutchman is equally determined to address United’s weakness in midfield.
Manchester United have had been linked with top midfielders like Paul Pogba, Arturo Vidal and Toni Kroos, but Van Gaal has asked the United hierarchy to focus on Schweinsteiger instead.
Van Gaal also likes Roma’s world-class midfielder Kevin Strootman and is keen to bring him at Old Trafford, but the Dutch midfielder is unlikely to return to action until autumn after he suffered a serious knee injury in March during a game against Napoli.
United will probably wait to see how Strootman recovers from his injury before they attempt to sign him. The Red Devils also wanted Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich, but the German international signed a new deal at the club recently.
Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Anderson is likely to leave the club, while the futures of Marouane Fellaini, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley are also in danger.
