Manchester United overcame a two goal first leg deficit to progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League at the expense of a brave Olympiakos, with a Robin van Persie hat-trick giving David Moyes brief respite from the horrors of the club’s domestic campaign.
The Dutchman was as clinical as they come on Wednesday, dispatching a penalty and converting a Wayne Rooney cross in the first half, before a well worked free-kick routine saw Van Persie deceive Roberto in the Olympiakos goal, and bag his hat-trick with a shot into the left corner.
There had been rumours that David Moyes was walking the managerial tightrope before kickoff, and this result couldn’t have come at a better time for the Scot, who sees his side remain in Europe’s premier competition, advancing to the last eight.
