According to reports from the Sunday Times, Manchester United are in advanced negotiations to sign Southampton full back Nathaniel Clyne. It is reported that the Red Devils have already bid £18m for the 24 year old English right back who could become their second summer signing after Memphis Depay.
Clyne has featured in 39 appearances for the Saints this season and is also starting to establish himself in the England national team. United manager Louis Van Gaal has played Antonio Valencia at right back with Brazilian Rafael injured for a majority of the time this campaign. Phil Jones too has slotted in that position but Van Gaal is right to chase a specialist player in the position.
Last summer, Luke Shaw joined the Red Devils from Southampton and Clyne could follow suit to join his former team mate at Old Trafford at the end of the current season. Since Vice Chairman Ed Woodward has taken responsibilities to complete transfer dealings, the Red Devils have waited till the very end to conclude deals.
However, as the past month suggests, United could do business early this time out as they look to mount a Premier league title challenge in the coming campaign.
