Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are linked with Benfica’s highly rated winger Niko Gaitan, as per reports from Portugal newspaper O Jogo.
The Red Devils were linked with Gaitan on several occasions in the past. Even this season, the 25-year-old winger has been heavily linked with a move, although his agent insisted that the player is unlikely to leave the club in the summer. However, he could be allowed to leave the club, if the right price is met by the potential suitors.
The connection with Spurs seems bit odd at the moment. Attacking midfield probably is the only position where Spurs have abundance of players in their ranks. Young and potential world class talents like Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli are struggling to get regular games at the club, one might wonder, why would they be interested in buying an out and out winger like Gaitan.
That brings us to Manchester United and it could be a possibility. United wingers have been a huge disappointment this season, with players like Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Nani have failed to reproduce their old forms. David Moyes could be looking to shake things up in the January transfer window and therefore a move for their long term target cannot be simply over ruled either.
According to the report, United are seriously considering to bolster their attack in January, after the Red Devils have made a stuttering start to the season, lying in 8th place in the league table, 8 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
The Argentine star joined Benfica in 2010-11 from Boca Juniors and has been an important figure for the Águias ever since. He made 75 league appearances for the club in three years and has scored 18 goals in the league, providing 38 assists.
