Manchester United may have signed Marouane Fellaini for a hefty transfer fee in the summer transfer window but people have understood by now that he is not the solution to United’s midfield woes. Quite naturally, United are still getting linked with several midfielders even after purchasing the Belgian.
According to the latest report from German newspaper Bild, the Premier League champions are set to go head-to-head with La Liga champions Barcelona for the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Jorge Resurrección Merodio aka Koke.
The 21-year-old, who is often dubbed as the next Xavi, is a technically gifted footballer. Koke is one of the star performers for Atletico this season, as the Rojiblancos are looking to break the duopoly of Real Madrid and Barcelona for the first time in many years. He started his senior career at the age of 17 and has been an extremely consistent performer over the past 18 months, appearing in 33 of the 38 league matches.
Manchester United had targeted Ander Herrara in the summer transfer window and according to several reports they would go for him again in January. However, Herrara has started the season poorly and has come under criticism from his coach and the club president.
In that case, a move for Koke, who has a release clause of €20m, will prove to be a smart one from United’s point of view. The best thing about Koke is his versatility. He can play on the wings and as a central midfielder as well. However, they would face a tough competition from Barcelona, who might consider him as a long term replacement of Xavi.
