Liverpool v Manchester United kicks off in just under 3 hours, and it’s going to be a massive game for both sides in more ways than one.
Manchester United lost to Chelsea in their last Premier League outing, arguably due to poor refereeing decisions but you cannot argue against the fact that United have been underwhelming this season, not imposing themselves in matches despite winning them most of the time, and it was that lack of dominance that led to a reversal at Stamford Bridge, despite the excellent first-half performance.
Arsenal’s draw against Sunderland yesterday will give United some breathing room – but they still need to put Liverpool away to ensure that the title race does not come down to just the game at the Emirates. They’re missing key players, they’re trying a new center-back pairing, their strikers aren’t firing, it’ll be a tough, tough game for the Red Devils and although reputation and their track record suggests that United will raise themselves when it really matters, the fact is that that same increase in quality was sorely lacking at previous key points in the season, and it might be a step too far to expect United to turn Liverpool over on strength of will alone.
Liverpool aren’t any closer to Champions League football and they may lose Pepe Reina in the summer but this is one game they’d be definitely up for, and more importantly their fans would be up for. For Liverpool to lose to Manchester United in the normal course of events is one thing, and the damage might be lessened because of relative league positions, but with the 19th league title on the line, and a chance to derail United’s title charge in any case should be motivation enough for the likes of Kenny Dalglish and co.
The way their season is going, United would be happy with a draw and could set out to be more defensive than they were against Liverpool, so it might not be a bad idea for Liverpool to attack from the word go, and exploit United’s injury problems at the back. Land a couple of early blows, and United may not recover for the rest of the season. Fail to seize the momentum though, and this could be the game (along with the one at the Emirates) that gives United the 19th league title.
