Liverpool are preparing an improved offer (already a £10m bid rejected last month) for Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to reports from Liverpool Echo.
The 24-year-old has only a year left on his contract at St Mary’s and he has refused to sign a new deal at the club. The Saints have offered him an extension to the deal but privately they are resigned to losing their star defender.
Liverpool are looking to sign a right-back in the summer following the departure of Glen Johnson and see Clyne as a perfect replacement. Also, the recurrent injury to Jon Flanagan is a major concern for the Reds.
Manchester United are also reportedly interested in signing the defender but Echo understands that the player is keen on a move to Anfield. The Red Devils may look elsewhere for a new full back leaving Liverpool with a good chance of signing him in the summer.
Southampton are demanding a fee in the region of £15m for the defender. Following the events of last season, when Liverpool signed three Southampton players in the summer, the relationship between the clubs have turned frosty. However, if Clyne is determined to join Liverpool, Southampton could allow him to leave, provided the improved offer is good enough for them to consider.
Other transfer reports: Liverpool are hoping to sign Charlton’s highly promising defender, Joe Gomez within next week. The Reds are prepared to pay 3.5m for the 18-year-old who is versatile enough to play as a centre-back or right back.
