We reported yesterday that Chelsea are targeting Barcelona’s young right back Martin Montoya and are keen to land him either in the January transfer window or at the end of the season.
The 22-year-old who made him debut in 2011 under former manager Pep Guardiola has struggled to secure regular starting berth due to the continuous presence of Brazilian right back Dani Alves.
The player’s agent, Jose Maria Orobitg, said: “For the moment he is under contract with FC Barcelona until the end of the season.
“We have talked but there is no certainty that Martin Montoya would hold down a first-team spot, because right now Daniel Alves closes the door.”
However, according to reports from German newspaper Bild, Liverpool are leading the chase to sign Montoya and are preparing a bid for the talented full-back.
It is reported that the Reds are going to make a pre-contract for the player who will be a free agent at the end of the season. Montoya’s agent has also confirmed that Liverpool are “ahead of the pack” to land the Spaniard.
Liverpool already have Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom in that position so it will be interesting to see whether Brendan Rodgers actually move for him or not in coming months.
