If the reports are to be believed, Liverpool are showing serious interest in Inter Milan’s highly rated Croatian central midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
English press, especially the tabloids, are feeding us the information that the Reds indeed are putting a concrete effort to sign the midfielder. In Italy, there are mixed receptions. Kovacic has a contract till 2019, and the player himself wants to stay at the Serie A club.
Recently, famous Italian ‘pink’ newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, claimed that Liverpool and Inter Milan have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of the player. The story has been nicely covered by Sport Witness, which you can read here.
Gazzetta claimed that Liverpool have offered €23m for the player, which is still however, way short of the Inter’s valuation.
According to transfer expert, Alfredo Pedulla (via TMW), who notes in his SportItalia blog, Liverpool have put in a bid of €21m for the midfielder. Obviously it didn’t meet the demands, as Inter are asking for €25m plus bonuses to reach an agreement.
Kovacic is a highly talented player who would improve Liverpool considerably. He is only 21 and has the age in his side to grow into a world class player, everyone think he would become in future. Do Liverpool see him as a natural replacement for Steven Gerrard? Only time will tell.
