The Football League Cup, also known as the Carling Cup and the Capital One Cup previously is the most prestigious domestic cup competition in England after the FA Cup.
The Football League Cup began in 1960, and it has held the name of its primary sponsor since 1981.
However this season there is no main sponsor for the competition and therefore it has been named as the English Football League Cup for the 2016/17 season.
Previously the finals were played in February, March, or April, but over the last few years, the final has taken place either at the end of February or in early March.
Apart from all the Premier League member clubs, 72 other clubs from the three divisions of the Football League participate in this competition.
Liverpool have won the most number of League Cup titles with eight.
Manchester City are the current holders, having beaten Liverpool in a penalty shootout in last season’s final.
Initially, the top tier clubs tend to field their weakened squads for the early rounds of the League cup; this has resulted in unpredictable results and upsets.
The lower division sides are often motivated and manage to grind out astonishing wins over world class sides at times.
This has resulted in surprise finalists or winners over the years and this has added a lot of thrill and excitement to the competition.
League Cup provides the chance of earning a place in the UEFA Europa League and therefore many clubs take it very seriously.
