Schalke defender Joel Matip is now officially registered as a Liverpool player.
The defender joins Jurgen Klopp’s side on a free transfer. The Liverpool website has confirmed that the player has signed long term deal with the Reds.
Matip’s contract with Schalke expired yesterday.
The German born defender had a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool.
Matip had a very good season with Schalke in the Bundesliga last year and will look to continue his growth as a footballer in the Premier League now.
His arrival will add much needed aerial presence at Liverpool. The defender will be an asset both defensively and offensively during set pieces and crosses.
The only issue with Matip is that the Cameroon international and will join his national team during the AFCON at the start of 2017. He could be a big miss for Klopp if he manages to settle in properly.
Matip is expected to start the season alongside Sakho as Liverpool’s first choice centre back.
Liverpool Echo have now confirmed that Matip will wear the number 32 shirt next season. The player specifically requested for the number which belonged to midfielder Cameron Brannagan.
