England 1-1 United States
2010 FIFA World Cup Group Stage
12 June 2010
The question marks surrounding England’s goalkeeping would prove to have a major impact on the match against the USA. The Three Lions started the match off strong and looked like they were heading for a victory until a mistake from goalkeeper Robert Green.
In the 4th minute, England took the lead with a Steven Gerrard goal. Emile Heskey received a pass near the edge of the box as Gerrard made a great run into the box as he received a the ball and then scored from inside the box. It caught the USA defense asleep and immediately put England in control with a 1-0 lead.
After the goal, the Americans looked a bit stunned but would recover and slowly create some chances. The turning point of the match would come in the 40th minute with a mistake from Green. Clint Dempsey found some space and took a shot from long range that bounced and fell into the goalkeeper. Green looked like he would make a routine save before fumbling it and eventually letting it cross the line. It was now 1-1.
The second half was much more open as England pushed for a goal but the USA defense was strong. The best chance was actually for the USA as Jozy Altidore had a shot deflected off Green’s hands and then off the post. England had a few chances of their own including one from Emile Heskey who didn’t look confident and shot it right at Howard from close range.
The draw will be a disappointment for an England side who had a lead while the Americans will be happy to not lose thei opening group stage match.
