Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast
2010 FIFA World Cup
20 June 2010
Brazil would clinch a spot in the next round of the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Ivory Coast. Most of the headlines will probably focus on the end of the match where it turned physical between the two sides and Kaka was sent off for a red card (second yellow).
Brazil is still not showing their best form but was able to take the lead in the 25th minute with Luis Fabiano got behind the defense after a Kaka pass and drilled a shot into the top corner. It was a great finish and opened up the match for the South Americans. Luis Fabiano would extend the Brazilian’s lead in the 50th minute as he beat a few defenders before scoring with a shot from inside the box. Replays show there was a case for handball as he chested it down but it looked to get part of his arm as well.
The final goal for Brazil was scored by Elano in the 62nd minute as he received a pass from Kaka and easily finished from close range. The Ivory Coast would get one back as Didier Drogba made good run and then headed a pass into the back of the net in the 79th minute.
The Kaka red card would come in the 88th minute as the Ivory Coast showed some frustrations. This resulted in some bad challenges including one on Elano that forced him to leave the pitch with an injury. The red card to Kaka also seemed harsh and it was clear that Kader Keita was into him and then dove. It was almost comical as he fell to the ground holding his face but there was clearly no contact.
Overall, it wasn’t strongest performance from Brazil but a comfortable win to clinch a spot in the knockout stage.
