According to reports from Madrid based newspaper, AS, Barcelona will be paying attentions to see whether Chelsea are willing to sell Brazilian defender David Luiz or not in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old was a summer target of Barcelona while there were reports that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho doesn’t rate the defender too highly. Luiz has made only five league appearances this season and currently is suffering from a knee injury.

Barcelona’s veteran defender Carles Puyol has returned to the squad recently but the comeback wasn’t strong as expected. The Spaniard has returned after seven months of injury lay-off but he is very far from returning to his best shape and Barcelona are searching for better options.

Defence is one of the key areas Barcelona are trying to add players in the January window, and would consider David Luiz as an option. Barcelona are leading the La Liga table at the moment, but there are huge concern over the defence.

Javier Mascherano is going through a bad form while Gerard Pique has failed to provide enough stability at the back. The only obstacle was his transfer value. AS reports that in summer Chelsea demanded more than 50m for him, while Barcelona were only willing to pay within 30m. However, the situation could change in January and Barca could invest big on the highly rated defender.
