FIFA has been dealt another blow to its image with the news that Sony is set to end its partnership with world football’s governing body.
Reuters reports that the company – a FIFA sponsor for the past eight years, with a $280 million contract – will not renew its World Cup sponsorship.
It marks another low-point in a difficult few months for FIFA, with investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups dominating recent headlines.
American prosecutor Michael Garcia recently provided a confidential report on alleged corruption during the bidding.
However, FIFA effectively cleared successful bidders Russia and Qatar of wrongdoing, and have been roundly criticized for a lack of transparency.
Emirates Airline’s earlier this month ended their own FIFA sponsorship and Sony – although there is no official word of yet – is set to do the same.
