According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are considering a £3m move for Vitessee Arnhem goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen.
Velthuizen is a bright spot on one of the Eredivisie’s bottom sides. He was in the Netherlands’ Olympic squad in Beijing, and though he hasn’t been capped by the senior team, he has already been called up. So, it looks to be only a matter of time before he makes the step up from the depths of the Eredivisie to one of Europe’s top clubs.
Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski are set as Arsenal’s top two ‘keepers, but Velthuizen could come in and replace Vito Mannone as the third man on the pecking order. If Almunia holds on to the #1 jersey for the next few seasons, Fabianski may well want to pursue a future elsewhere if he wants to be Poland’s #1, so the opportunity could be there for Velthuizen to be Almunia’s understudy in a short time.
However, if Arsenal do want to snap up one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers, they’ll have to be quick about it, because the likes of Valencia and Inter Milan have also been linked with Velthuizen.
