As we gear up for Saturday’s big English Classic horse race let’s see what the prize money for the Epsom Derby is and just how much the winning horse gets.

Epsom Derby Prize Money: £1.5m Guaranteed With the 2023 Winner To Get £892k

There will be a guaranteed £1.5m on offer in total 2023 Epsom Derby prize money this Saturday, with the winning connections set to bank a cool £892,161.72.

However, despite being the English premier flat race, the Epsom Derby is still some way off being the most lucrative horse race on the planet, with the Saudi Cup worth a staggering $20m to the winner and the Dubai World Cup $12m.

This year the Epsom Derby will also have a new sponsor in UK bookmaker Betfred plus will also be run earlier than normal (1:30pm, Sat 3rd June) to avoid clashing with the FA Cup Final.

Supplemented Passenger Will Need To Finish 4th Or Better To Make It Pay

With the final Epsom Derby runners out on Thursday 1st June we know that recent Dante Stakes third Passenger will be in the race after his connections stumped up the £85,000 fee to supplement him for the race.

The Sir Michael Stoute runner will therefore need to finish fourth or better to make this outlay pay off – but should he finish 5th he’ll bank £42k and a loss of £43k.

That said, if Stoute can win the race for a second year in a row and land the £892k top prize, this means connections would have ten-folded their supplement fee and made it risk worth taking.

2023 Epsom Derby Winning Prize Down £17k On Last Year

Despite the decent £892k first prize for the Derby winner, this is actually down £17k on what Desert Crown received in 2022 for landing the Epsom Blue Riband race – he won £909,628.40.

How Much Will The Winning Epsom Derby Jockey Get?

This can vary slightly depending on if a jockey has a retained deal with a particular owner. However, the general rule for a flat jockey in the UK is they will get 8.5% of any advertised win prize money and 2.61% of any place money.

This means the winning jockey of the 2023 Epsom Derby will get 8.5% of the first prize of £892,161.72, which is £75,833.75 – not bad for about 2 minutes work!

Oh, and each flat jockey will also get a £157.90 riding fee.
