With the Epsom Derby this weekend we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and see where the last five winners of the famous English Classic are now.

The Last FIVE Epsom Derby Winners – What Are They Up To Now?

With the Epsom Derby first run in 1780 the race is steeped in history, but with it being a contest for 3 year-old colts only many winners have a short-lived career after taking the big English Classic.

Let’s look at where the last five winners are now and what they achieved soon after winning their Epsom Derby.

2022: Desert Crown – Still Racing

  • Career Runs: 4 (to date)
  • Wins: 3
  • Total Prize Money: £1,031,201

This lightly-raced Sir Michael Stoute-trained Nathaniel colt won the 2022 Epsom Derby by 2 1/2 lengths (watch below) – on what was only his third career run.

After winning the Derby, which made it 3-from-3 for Desert Crown, there were talks of the King George, Juddmonte International and Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe – however, he had a training setback and wasn’t seen again in 2022.

Desert Crown was kept in training though and returned recently in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park. He was sent off as the short-priced 2/5 favourite that day but had his colours lowered by the 2022 Coronation Cup winner Hukum – a defeat that ended his unbeaten record.

Now a 4 year-old, many feel that he might just have needed that return run after 355-days off and holds entries in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Coral-Eclipse and later in the year in the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe.

2021: Adayar – Still Racing

  • Career Runs: 11 (to date)
  • Wins: 5
  • Total Prize Money: £1,785,742

Provided trainer Charlie Appleby with his second Epsom Derby winner after causing a mini shock to win in 2021 (watch below).

Jockey William Buick preferred another Godolphin horse in the race – Hurricane Lane – that year to prove that they don’t always get it right, with Adayar left for Adam Kirby to ride.

The son of Frankel won the Derby as a 16/1 shot in 2021 – powering home by 4 1/2 lengths (watch below)

He followed up in his next race by winning the King George at Ascot and also went into finish fourth in the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe. A 5th (of 9) in the Champion Stakes at Ascot was a race too far for the young horse and wasn’t seen again until Sept 22 (327 days later) when winning a Conditions race at Doncaster.

He remains in training as a 5 year-old and was seen on this year on May 7th when making a winning return in the Group Three Gordon Richards Stakes at Newmarket. While looking ahead he’s entered in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on 21st June and is also in the Coral-Eclipse in July and could have another tilt at the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe in October.

2020: Serpentine – Still Racing (Australia)

  • Career Runs: 16 (to date)
  • Wins: 2
  • Total Prize Money: £408,027

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Epsom Derby eight times with his most recent success Serpentine in 2020. This surprise winner led the field a merry dance from the front that year under an inspired ride by jockey EJ McNamara – winning at 25/1 by 5 1/2 lengths (watch below).

Since that win, however, the horse is yet to win another race. He ran five more times for O’Brien without success and was then sold to an owner in Australia. He’s raced seven times now Down Under without scoring but went close last time out (May 23) when a nose runner-up in a handicap at Eagle Farm.

2019: Anthony Van Dyck (Died as a 4 year-old)

  • Career Runs: 19
  • Wins: 6
  • Total Prize Money: £2,365,891

This was Aidan O’Brien’s seventh Epsom Derby winner at the time and took the race under jockey Seamie Heffernan at 13/2 (watch below). Prior to winning the race he’d won the Lingfield Derby Trial and became the first horse since High Rise (1998) to win both races.

He failed to win again during his 3 year-old days from 5 more races) – running 2nd in the 2019 Irish Derby and 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Anthony Van Dyck trained on as a 4 year-old too – running 5 more times and winning the Group Two Prix Foy in September 2020, but his last outing was a sad one after being fatally injured in the 2020 Melbourne Cup after stumbling around 3 furlongs out.

2018: Masar (Standing at Stud)

  • Career Runs: 11
  • Wins: 4
  • Total Prize Money: £1,028,797

Surprisingly, Masar was giving Godolphin their first ever Epsom Derby winner when taking the Classic in 2018 under jockey William Buick, which was also a first for him and trainer Charlie Appleby.

The horse slammed Dee Ex Bee by 1 1/2 lengths that day at 16/1 but wasn’t seen out again that season. He trained on as a 4 year-old to race twice more, but failed to win either of those outings which came in the Hardwicke Stakes (5th) and Princess Of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes (6th) so it was no shock he was soon sent to stud where he remains to this day.

He stands at the Dalham Hall Stud in England for a fee of £14,000.
