White Birch, who was a neck runner-up in the Dante Stakes at York this season will be a popular pick to go one better in the 2023 Epsom Derby ahead of the June 3rd race.
Trained by John Joseph Murphy in Ireland, this eye-catching grey was last seen running The Foxes to a neck in the 2023 Dante Stakes at York – staying on well to the line.
Prior to that he’d won the Group Three Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown in early April and with just four career runs looks a horse with more in the locker.
This Ulysses colt is also a half-brother to Passenger, who was just behind in third in the Dante and could head to the Derby too. While that York race is often a good guide to the Epsom Classic. In the last 20 runnings we’ve seen 5 horses to the Dante/Derby double, including last when Desert Crown won both races.
If White Birch can win the 2023 Epsom Derby, he’ll become the only the fifth horse to win the Blue Riband race, with the last Airborne in 1946. More recently Silver Patriarch (1997) and Terimon (1989) were both grey Derby runners-up.
