Best Online Slots Sites in the UK

We’ve given you our list of what we think are the best online casino slots sites currently available in the UK … but how did we come up with it? Why did some sites make the list but others didn’t, and why are some sites towards the top of the list and others towards the bottom?

Here are the prime factors we consider when undertaking our investigation and making our evaluations.

  • Game Quality – plenty of sites boast that they have ‘hundreds of slots!’ but that does not mean they have hundred of playable slots. We check sites to see how high the quality of the slots they have is. If the slots section is padded out with dozens of poor-quality slots that look unappealing to us, then we’ll give the site a hard pass.
  • Game Variety – not everyone likes a specific type of slot. We will come to game variety later, but when we review a slots site we like to see a good range of slot varieties – classic slots, video slots, progressive jackpot slots, Megaways slots, ‘all ways pay’ slots and ‘cluter pays’ slots and the best bonus slots too. The more ticks in boxes, the merrier.
  • Bonuses and Promotions – the best free slots spins bonus is always a good starter when it comes to an online slots site. It allows you to look over a site to see what’s on offer, and then take a slot for a few free spins that don’t cost you anything. We always check such offers to see how fair the T&Cs are, and also check out any other offers available at the site.
  • Other Games – no matter how much of a slot lover you may be, you may not want to only play slots at an online casino. That’s why we check out the other games available at any slots site and see if they are up to scratch. Blackjack, roulette, baccarat, video poker … the more options, the better! We also check for live casino games, and even sports betting!
  • Payment Methods – if you are a slotting fan in the UK then you probably know that you cannot play slots for free – you can only play real money slots. That means you need money in your casino site account. We check the payments methods a site has made available and again, the more the merrier! We also check for processing times, plus if a casino charges for withdrawals that’s a definite black mark from us.
  • Support – not a lot goes wrong when you use a slots or online casino site but if something should go amiss, or if you need something explained to you, then support should be available. Live chat support is the bare minimum, and dedicated support, not a third party provider who just looks through the T&Cs when you contact them. Telephone support is good too, as are extensive FAQs and a manned email inbox.
  • Safety – for a start, for UK people we only champion sites that have the necessary UKGC licence. We also only champion sites that use encryption tools to encrypt all traffic, and have their games ratified by an independent body such as eCOGRA.
  • Responsible Gambling – we feel it’s important that sites offer responsible gambling tools such as deposit limits, time-outs and the abillity to self-exclude. We also think that sites should use GAMSTOP, which prevents problem gamblers from using them at all.

Why Play Online Slots?

The main reason people play online slots is because they find them entertaining, and that should be the main reason that anyone plays online slots. There are thousands of slots to choose from, and they all have their own uniqueness, although some slots are more unique than others!

The added bonus with online slots is that you could win money. You are not guaranteed to win money, but, just like playing a lottery tickets, you’ve got to be in it to win it.

Slots are also very easy to play. It really is just a case of watching the reels spin and hoping that they land in a winning combination. There is very little user-interaction aside from hitting that ‘spin’ buttion, time after time.

The one reason you should not play online slots is if you are expecting it to be a viable source of income. Sure, you may win cash, and if you play a slot with a progressive jackpot you might win a massive sum of money (the same risk-for-reward of that lottery ticket we mentioned earlier), but you are just as likely not to, so, enjoy your slots playing, but if you end up losing too much money, stop playing!

Online Slots Variation

There are many different kinds of online slots. Slots certainly have much more variety than any other casino game, including blackjack and roulette. If you get bored of one type of slot you can simply move onto a different kind!

Here is your handy guide to the many different kinds of online slots found at all the best UK slots sites and casinos.

Classic Slots

If you have been brought up in the UK then a slot machine (or one-armed bandit) to you has three reels and one single payline right across the middle. That is how slot machines have been found in the UK for decades (and, to the largest extent, still are). The majority of online slots are of the ‘video slots’ variety, though.

sc screenshot

You will still find ‘classic slots’ at online casinos, but they are not very popular. Very few online slots developers (like Play’n GO) still create three-reel slots that are released to online casinos, but nearly all of them will have more than one payline, so they are not as ‘classic’ as they are supposed to be. William Hill has plenty of classic slots.

Video Slots

Video slots originated in the 1980s in Las Vegas. Thanks to advances in computer chip technology, mechanical slots were joined in casinos by slots that had a video screen as opposed to reels. These slots were computer controlled, and offered much more than mechanical slots, including multiple paylines, wild and scatter symbols and bonus side games.

sb2 screenshot

The majority of online slots released today are video slots. They can be recognised instantly as they have five reels and three rows. Some will have more than five reels and more than three rows, but the majority will still have wilds, scatters and bonus games. Video slots dominate the UK slotting market. Visit Kwiff for the best in video slots.

Avalanche Slots

The avalanche feature was triggered by the arrival of NetEnt’s classic slot Gonzo’s Quest in 2011. In this ground-breaking slot, the symbols fell into place within a playing grid, instead of spinning around the reels. If any symbols were involved in a win, then they would explode with new symbols falling in from above as replacement with the possibilty of triggering a new win. In addition, a multiplier would advance with each win until it reached the maximum level of x5. When there was no new win following an avalanche, then the multiplier would reset pack to x1.

gq screenshot

There have been dozens of slots released since Gonzo’s Quest with the avalanche feature, or ‘cascade’ as it also known. These are always entertaining slots to play with the bonus being the chance to score ‘free’ wins courtesy of exploding symbols and their cascading replacements. Mansion Bet has plenty of avalanche slots.

Progressive Jackpot Slots

Slots with progressive jackpots actually pre-date the internet. Casinos found ways of linking slots via radio signals so that they could share a massive jackpot opportunity. A small percentage of every cent pumped into any one of the linked slots would contribute to a rolling, progressive jackpot. If a rare combination of symbols landed on any of the slots, then the jackpot would pay out.

mm screenshot

Legally, every progressive jackpot had to be won at least once. The MGM casino in Las Vegas wanted to remove their past-its-sell-by date Lion’s Share slot in the 2000s but couldn’t, as it has never paid out its jackpot. It finally did in 2014 after being installed in 1993.

The UK jackpot for a progressive slots win stands at £13,213,838.68, won on Microgaming’s Mega Moolah in 2015. One thing to note, progressive jackpots are only available on such slots if you play for the maximum stake. Check out 2kbet for jackpot slots.

All Ways Pay Slots

Video Slots in the 80s in Las Vegas introduced the concept of multiple pay lines. No longer was there simply a single pay line across the middle, there were dozens of them, some of them creating nonsensical patterns across the reels.

thunderstruck 2

Some slots disregard paylines altogether. To score a win, you only need to get identical symbols on successive reels, usually from left-hand reel onwards. These are known as ‘all ways pay slots’ as all possible paylines are in operative.

A slot with five reels and three rows has 243 paylines (3^5, or 3x3x3x3x3). A slot with six reels and four rows has 4,096 paylines (4^6, or 4x4x4x4x4x4). SportNation has plenty of all ways pay slots.

Megaways Slots

Big Time Gaming decided, in 2016, to take their popular slot Bonanza and release a sequel called ‘Bonanza’ Megaways. The number of reels was increased to six, and the number of symbols visible on any one reels after each spin varied from one to seven. As a result, Big Time Gaming created a slot that had a staggering maximum of 117,649 paylines.

montezuma mw

Bonanza Megaways become so popular that Big Time Gaming started applying the ‘Megaways’ concept to their other slots … and then other companies came a-knocking, asking if they could ‘lease’ the Megaways concept from BTG and apply it to their own games.  BTG said “yes, but you’re gonna have to pay,” and those companies said “yeah, okay!”.

As a result, there are now many dozens of Megaways slots all over the online casino world from multiple providers. Casino Planet is a good slte for Megaways slots.

Cluster Pays Slots

The ‘cluster’ concept originated with popular non-slotting games such as Bejeweled and Kandy Krush. In both games you had to create combos of the same symbol – at least three that touched horizontally or vertically (not diagonally). Those symbols would disappear and new ones would come into replace them.

r screenshot

Cluster slots work in the same way, except that you are paid for the combos created. The symbols fall into a playing grid (you have no control over them, unlike Bejeweled or Kandy Krush) and if you are fortunate, then combos will appear. Cluster pays slots can have wilds, scatters and bonus features just like regular slots. Visit Britain Bet for lots of cluster pays slots.

How to Play Online Slots

If you never played an online slot online, then you’re probably wondering what on earth is going on, particularly if you have been brought up on three-reel, one armed bandits. As a demostration of how to to play online slots, we are going to take NetEnt’s immensively popular Starburst slot for a spin. Visit one of our recommended casinos and slots sites UK if you want to play Starburst yourself, as most of them will carry this popular title.

sb1 screenshot

This is the Starburst start up screen. This slots has the standard five reels and three rows. It also has ten paylines. Unusually, Starburst’s paylines run from left to right and from right to left, giving in effect twenty possible winning ways.

Currently, our coin value is 20p. As there are ten paylines, we pay ten coins per line. Our overall stake is £2.00. The ‘bet level’ is set to one. This can be increased up to five. The bet level increases all stakes and winnings, but we are happy at level one. As we only have £3.22 in the bank, we are not going to have many spins at £2 per spin! We can reduce our coin value though to something less valuable!

sb2 screenshot

So, we have reduced our coin size to 1p, meaning we are risking 10p on each spin, and not £2. This sounds much more reasonable. As we are now ready to get spinning, we hit the spin button.

sb3 screenshot

Alas, we did not win. We did score a few high-paying ‘7’ symbols, but in order to win we need three identical symbols in sequence on a pay line, starting from the left-hand reel and moving right, or starting from the right-hand reel and moving left. We spin again …

sb4 screenshot

After a couple of spins we score our first win, hurrah! We land three consecutive orange gem symbols on payline five, from the right-hand reel moving left. This wins us seven coins, and as our coin size is 1p, we win 7p! Book that luxury cruise!

The maximum payout on Starburst is 50,000 coins, which with 1p set as our coin size would be a tasty £500!

We can keep spinning in the hope that we will keep winning, or we can move to a different slot. This is how most online slots work, but they all have their own quirks and rules. Before playing any slot check the information available so that you know what you are looking for in terms of winning combinations.

New Slots Sites UK

The casino site industry in the UK (and beyond) remains a lucrative one, despite recent changes in regulation. There are plenty of UK slots sites with UKGC licences already, but that does not seen to stop new sites from springing up, almost on a daily basis!

If you find a new slots site or online casino then it is always worth checking it out. It may have slots that you’ve not played before, or a new and exciting way of doing things. It should also offer a bonus, which is something that is always worth checking out! Usually, you’ve nothing to lose when taking up a bonus, but make sure that you read the T&Cs associated with the bonus thoroughly just to make sure there’s a chance of you actually coming out on top, and that’s it’s not just a waste of your time.

Here are five of the best new online slots sites in the UK for 2024.

  1. Kwiff – One of the best sites for slots in the UK

  3. Britain Bet – Popular in post-Brexit Britain!
  4. Casino Planet – A new site, and a good one!

Online Developers – Makers of the Best Slots Online

Online casinos do not create their own games. There are several companies that specialise in the creation of online slotting titles which they then lease to game aggregators such as EveryMatrix or directly to online casinos. If an online casino signs up to a game aggregator like EveryMatrix then they will automatically have access to dozens or even hundreds of online slots by only having to sign a single deal.

Here is a quick run down of the most well-known and best slots online creators with slots available in the UK.

Netent LogoSwedish firm NetEnt set the casino world aflame with the ground-breaking release of Gonzo’s Quest in 2011. They swiftly followed that up a year later with Starburst, which probably holds the record for the number of slotting plays recorded all over the internet. NetEnt was founded in 1996 but can trace its roots all the way back to the 1970s as it was originally a department within a real-world slots operator named Cherry.

For over a decade now NetEnt have been releasing the very best in online slots. They were the undoubted kings of slots for many years, but eventually the rest of the slotting world caught up with them. So much so that in 2020 the company was sold to live casino specialists, Evolution.

microgaming logoIsle of Man-based Microgaming originally created online casinos but they found other casinos approaching them to lease their games, so they decided to concentrate on making slots and casino games instead. For most of the 2000s Microgaming were the number one supplier of slots and casino games across the internet. These days, the company leaves development to any one of the studios that they have purchased over the time they have been in business.

Microgaming are perhaps most famed for their slots with progressive jackpots. ‘Mega Moolah’ is perhaps the most famous of all because it generates the biggest jackpots. The game now has several sequels and parallel titles, but the original game retains it number one spot and has created several millionaires who have been fortunate enough to land the jackpot-winning combo. There are lots of slots sites, casino sites and even the best bingo sites with slots that have the best Microgaming slots.

playtechPlaytech have been around as long as Microgaming (late 1990s) and have always released a string of excellent slots. This company is most famous for their themed or franchise slots. They used to have a decent number of Marvel-themed slots, but when Disney bought Marvel they ended Playtech’s contract. However, Playtech simply re-skinned and rebranded all their Marvel slots as ‘Age of the Gods’.

This company is not as prevalent in the slotting world as it once was, but they still release a decent number of games. In 2019 they began to release a series of the best casino slots under an epic ‘Kingdoms Rise’ theme. You could buy a feature in one game and then use that feature in a different game in the series. Unfortunately, the UKGC decided they didn’t like this so Playtech had to deactivate this feature for UK players.

Play’n GO

Play n GOWith NetEnt, Microgaming and Playtech all slowing down on their slotting releases in 2020s, there has been room for new companies to step up fill some of the void. Top of this list is probably Play’n GO who – just like NetEnt – are from Sweden. The industry scoffed in 2019 when Play’n GO announced they were going to release one slot per week throughout the year, but they almost managed it, releasing a total of 50 new titles.

Play’n GO are a little unique as a software company as they still create and release ‘classic’ or three-reel slots on a regular basis. Despite their prodigious output, Play’n GO’s titles are usually very decent indeed, although understandably they have decelerated on their output since their epic year.

There are around three to four hundred slots developers providing online slot for casinos in the 2020s. Aside from the four developers mentioned above, here are a few more software houses with slotting output that you need to keep an eye on.

  • Yggdrasil
  • Big Time Gaming
  • Red Tiger
  • Blueprint Gaming
  • Pragmatic Play
  • Relax Gaming
  • Thunderkick
  • Habanero
  • Eyecon
  • iSoftBet
  • Quickspin

Online Slot Bonuses and Free Spins

Pratically every slots and casino sites will offer you a bonus, but not all are worth your while considerising. Many bonuses are fair and square, but some are so wrapped up in terms and conditions that it’s really too much of a bother to sign up to the casino and claim it.

For online slots and casino sites there are mainly two types of bonus – the welcome bonus and free or bonus spins (some offers will have a bonus and free spins). Here we will go through each type and explain what you need to look out for.

Welcome Bonus

A typical welcome bonus with be ‘deposit £20 to get a 100% bonus’. This means you have to deposit a minimum of £20 in order to receive a £20 bonus. If you deposit £50 you’ll receive £50 in bonus money, and so on, up to the offer’s maximum limit. A 50% bonus means that if you deposit £100 you get £50 in bonus money. A 200% bonus means a £20 deposit will see you awarded £40.

Free Spins

Free spins or bonus spins are spins on the best casino slots that you do not have to pay for. They could be for a specific slot, for a range of slots or for any slot the site possesses. The number of spins and their value is important. For example ‘100 Free Spins’ worth £0.10 each is less value than ’20 Free Spins’ worth £1 each. When you claim an offer your free spins should start automatically once you open any game that they apply to.

Wagering Requirements

Most, if not all offers come with wagering requirements. These apply to your bonus money or any free spins winnings. If a wagering requirement is 35x, then you need to wager your winnings or bonus 35 times over before you can withdraw it, or what’s left of it. So, if you win £20 or have £20 in bonus money, you need to wager £700 before you can withdraw.

Game Contributions

Not all games contribute towards wagering, but the good news for slots fans is that slots usually do, and in fuil. Some slots (and in particular the best RTP slots) may not count, so make sure you check the T&Cs of any offer to make sure. You can find out more of the best payout casinos via our guide.

Casino games such as blackjack, roulette and baccarat usually do not count at all or make a contribution between 5 and 10 percent. That means if you place a £1 bet on a roulette spin and roulette has a contribution of 10 percent, then only £0.10 (10% of £1) will be removed from your wagering requirements.

Bonus offers will have limits placed upon them, both in terms of time and winnings. When you sign up for a new account at a site you will have a limited time to claim any offers, to use them and then meet your wagering requirements. If you fail to meet any of these deadlines, then your bonus money may be removed from your accounts.

Bonus winnings and free spins winnings are usually capped too. If you take up an offer with a £100 cap and you win £200, then £100 of that is forfeited.

Best UK Slots with High RTPs

Before a slot can be released, it must be ratified (in the UK at least) by an independent review body, the most well-known of which is eCOGRA (eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation). The slot will be tested for randomness and fairness and if proven not to be random or fair, will be rejected.

As part of these tests, the slot’s RTP will also be checked and calculated. RTP stands for ‘return to player’ and is a measure of the slot’s ‘generosity’. The closer the slot’s RTP to 100 percent, the more ‘generous’ it is.

In theory, if a slot has an RTP of 96 percent, then if you begin a playing session with £100, then at the end of it you should have £96. Unfortunately, as slots are so volatile you’re just as likely to end up with £0 as you are £96, or £196. If you started a session with £1 million, played one million spins at £1 per spin, then you would probably have £960,000 left at the end of it.

RTP is a useful tool when choosing which slots to play. A decent RTP for a slot is between 96 and 98 percent. Slots with RTPs lower than 95% should definitely be avoided.

Here is a table outlining some of the best RTP slots available in the UK.

Mobile Slots

Slots are perfect for mobile gaming. When online slots first appeared, they were created using Adobe’s Flash environment. This was fine for a while until Apple banned Flash from their mobiles, meaning that most mobile slots could not be played on iPads or iPhones.

Nearly all modern slots are created using HTML5, which is the perfect tool for content for all browsers, devices and operating systems. No matter your device and whether it runs on iOS or Android, you will be able to play mobile slots without any issues. We do though recommend that you play via a strong internet connection such a WiFi, with 4G being the bare minimum.

UK Slots – 5 Expert Tips

It’s quite easy to get the most from your slots playing, but if you are new to online slots, then you may be wondering what online slots are all about. This is understandably in the UK, have you have been brought up on one-armed bandits with three reels and a single payline and not the types of video slots that have been seen in Las Vegas and Atlantic City since the 1980s.

Here are five expert tips that, if you follow, should allow you to get the most from your online slotting entertainment.

Tip 1: Manage your bankroll

it’s easy to get stuck with slots when money is involved as the symbols spin around the reels with speed. At £1 per spin you could lose a tenner in less than a minute!

Bankroll manangement is important with all forms of online gambling. Work out how much cash you have available for gambling once you have taken off all the crucial financial aspects of your life – rent, utilities, food, hobbies, entertainment and so on. This is your monthly bankroll. Divide this by ten to get your daily bankroll, and then by ten again to get your maximum stake.

If you deplete your daily bankroll in any single day, or your monthly bankroll in any single month, then quit and wait until your next bankroll is available. If you manage to double your daily or monthly bankroll then it’s a good idea to quit while you are ahead!

Tip 2: Don’t get stuck with one slot

Slots players usually find a favourite slot and then stick with it. That is all well and good, but if you do that there are plenty of slots that you will be missing out on! Check out all the new slots that appear and especially those that have been created by your favourite slotting providers. You might just discover a brand new slotting favourite!

Tip 3. Only play when you are 100%

The people who play slots are prone to ’tilting’, just like poker players. Tilting is when someone makes a decision that is based on emotion as opposed to logical thinking. Slots players ’tilt’ if they have a losing streak, or if they are influenced by some kind of external factor.

Never play slots if your are tired, distracted, stressed or are under the influence of drugs or anything else.

Tip 4. Don’t use ‘turbo mode’

Currently under review by the UKGC, many slots have ‘turbo mode’ which is a player-activated mode where the reels spin faster. We suggest that you never engage turbo mode when playing an online slot. The reels will spin faster, but you will lost the sense of how much money you are actually winning and losing. Slots reels spin fast enough – there really is no need to make them spin any faster!

Tip 5: Ignore ‘Slots Tournaments’

Many sites run slots tournaments but we advise you to stay clear of them unless you are a high roller. Once you see your name on a slots tournament leaderboard you may be influenced to spin the slots more (and spend more) in order to keep your name up in lights.

Usually it is only the tournament winner who actually profits from any slots tournament. The rest of the leaderboards peeps have usually spent more to get towards the top of the ladder than the prize they are awarded.

The Best UK Slots Final Thoughts

If you are in the UK, then you are lucky as there are hundreds of slots available for you to play. No matter your preference – video slots, all ways pays slots or cluster pays slots for example – you’ll be able to find many fine examples of brilliant slots that you can entertain yourself self. You may also win a bit of money too, if the reels land right!

We hope this guide to slotting life in the UK has been useful to you, and we wish you all the best with your slotting endeavours. Remember to always gamble responsibly and if slots stop being a source of entertainment to you, then stop playing them.
