Epsom Derby Runners 2023: Auguste Rodin, Military Order and Arrest Top The Betting

Not long now till the 2023 edition of the Epsom Derby and the runners are starting to form with all the big trial races now done and dusted.

Godolphin are looking for their third win in the fourth English Classic after successes in 2018 (Masar) and 2021 (Adayar), and will be pinning their hopes on recent Lingfield Derby Trial hero Military Order.

The Derby has also been farmed in recent years by trainer Aidan O’Brien with eight past wins – the most in the race’s history – and despite having a few possible entries his main hope looks to be the 2000 Guineas flop Auguste Rodin.

Dante Stakes 1st, 2nd and 3rd in The Foxes, White Birch and Passenger could all line-up too, while we’ll also be witnessing Frankie Dettori’s final Epsom Derby ride as the two-time winner of the race is hanging up is riding boots at the end of this season. He’s set to ride the Gosden-trained Arrest.

Main Epsom Derby Runners

See below the main Epsom Derby runners for the Saturday June 3rd race, with the latest odds from the leading horse racing betting sites.

Arrest @ 9/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 5
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 4 from 5
  • Total Career Winnings: £129,411
  • Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
  • Last Run: 1st Chester Vase (Chester), 10th May 2023

Juddmonte silksArrest has a big chance of being sent off as the 2023 Epsom Derby favourite – for two reasons. Firstly, he was impressive last time out when winning the Chester Vase by 6 1/2 lengths (watch below). And secondly, a certain Frankie Dettori is set to ride. The ‘Frankie Factor’ always has a big impact in the Epsom Derby with many ‘once-a-year’ punters betting on the race and seeing a familiar face riding.

Frankie has also already won the Coronation Cup and Oaks this week at Epsom and now eyes a famous Group One treble.

This Juddmonte-owned 3 year-old is also another Frankel colt, so is related to Military Order and having won 3 of his 5 starts to date hasn’t done much wrong. That last win at Chester was his first try upped in trip, but he saw it out well and having won on quick and soft ground then he’ll also be fine no matter what the weather throws at the Epsom course.

Arrest will be trying to become the first Chester Vase winner to follow-up in the Derby since Ruler Of The World in 2013, while he’ll also be looking to provide trainer John Gosden and Dettori with their third wins each.

Being a son of Frankel and ridden by Dettori it could be a double ‘Frankie’ party here.

Auguste Rodin @ 7/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 5
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 5 from 5
  • Total Career Winnings: £203,337
  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
  • Jockey: Ryan Moore
  • Last Run: Unplaced in 2000 Guineas (Newmarket), 6th May 2023

Michael Tabor silksAuguste Rodin will be looking to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with his nineth Epsom Derby win but will need to bounce back from a poor display in the 2000 Guineas last time first.

This son of Deep Impact trailed in 12th of 14 that day at Newmarket after being sent off the hot 13/8 favourite. However, many feel the step up to 1m4f is what he’s been crying out for and had been the ante-post Derby favourite all winter until that recent flop.

Last year he landed the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster (watch below) and if back in that sort of form would be a huge player here for his much-respected trainer.

His dam’s sire is also Galileo, the 2001 Epsom Derby winner and was also the first success in the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien – can Auguste Rodin follow in his grandfather’s hoofprints?

In recent days the betting public think so, as Auguste Rodin has been backed into the new Epsom Derby favourite.

Military Order @ 9/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 4
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 4 from 4
  • Total Career Winnings: £69,532
  • Trainer: Charlie Appleby
  • Jockey: William Buick
  • Last Run: 1st Lingfield Derby Trial (Lingfield), 13th May 2023

Godolphin first coloursMilitary Order is likely to be the sole Godolphin Epsom Derby runner for 2023 but will come into the race as one of the big fancies after winning Lingfield Derby Trial last time (watch below).

High Rise (1998) and Anthony Van Dyck (2019) were the last two horses to win the Lingfield Derby Trial and the main event.

Has now won three of his 4 career starts and this Frankel colt showed a lot of battling qualities last time at Lingfield on his first try at 1m4f. He stayed well that day and the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin has won the Derby twice in the last 5 years.

William Buick looks set to continue his partnership in the saddle, having ridden the horse in all four career starts. Overall, looks to have a big chance of giving his famous owners another big race success.

Passenger @ 13/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 2
  • Wins: 1
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 1 from 2
  • Total Career Winnings: £26,295
  • Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
  • Jockey: Richard Kingscote
  • Last Run: 3rd Dante Stakes (York), 18th May 2023

Flaxman Stables Ireland silksPassenger was many people’s big eyecatcher in the Dante Stakes at York last time out. The Sir Michael Stoute runner didn’t get the best of runs during the race with last year’s Derby-winning jockey Richard Kingscote admitting it was his fault.

However, this son of Ulysses stayed on well when he got a clear run and in the end wasn’t far away in third (watch below). That effort was also only his second career outing after winning well on debut at Newmarket in April.

Passenger has also now been supplemented for the Derby at a cost of £85,000 and he’ll need to finish fourth or better to get this fee back.

Dante form also often holds up well in the Derby – last year’s winner, Desert Crown, won both races, while Sir Michael Stoute will be eyeing his seventh Epsom winner with Shergar in 1981 the horse that started the ball rolling for the veteran Newmarket handler.

The Foxes  @ 11/1

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 6
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 0 from 6
  • Total Career Winnings: £69,532
  • Trainer: Andrew Balding
  • Jockey: Oisin Murphy
  • Last Run: 1st Dante Stakes (York), 18th May 2023

King Power Racing silksThe Foxes landed the 2023 Dante Stakes at York recently (watch below) and last year the winner of that race – Desert Crown – won the Epsom Derby.

In the last 20 years, we’ve seen 5 horses do the Dante/Derby double and with that decent 25% strike-rate The Foxes can’t be ignored.

Last season the 3 year-old some of Churchill landed the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket over a mile – beating another possible Epsom Derby runner 2023 Dubai Mile. The step up to 1m 2 1/2f last time in the Dante suited and lead home White Birch and Passenger that day so is closely matched with these other possible Derby runners.

If successful, The Foxes will be the first Derby winner for both jockey Oisin Murphy and trainer Andrew Balding.

Sprewell @ 12/1

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 4
  • Wins: 2
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 0 from 4
  • Total Career Winnings: £48,517
  • Trainer: Mrs John Harrington (Jessie)
  • Jockey: TBC
  • Last Run: 1st Derby Trial Stakes (Leopardstown), 7th May 2023

Sprewell silksSprewell shot up the Epsom Derby betting market recently after running away with the Leopardstown Derby Trial on 7th May (watch below). He powered away to beat Up And Under that day by 3 lengths on what was his first try beyond a mile (1m2f).

Each run to date has, however, come with ‘soft or heavy’ in the ground conditions so connections might be doing a ‘rain dance’ in the build-up to the June 3rd race.

Sprewell will also be hoping to become the first horse since High Chaparral to win both the Leopardstown Derby Trial and the Epsom Derby. Last year’s winner of the race – Stone Age – managed 6th in the Epsom race the following month.

If successful will also be the first Epsom Derby winner for Irish-based trainer Jessie Harrington.

White Birch @ 12/1

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 4
  • Wins: 2
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 0 from 4
  • Total Career Winnings: £75,146
  • Trainer: John Joseph Murphy
  • Jockey: TBC
  • Last Run: 2nd Dante Stakes (York), 18th May 2023

White Birch silksWhite Birch is also expected to have his supporters in the Epsom Derby – mainly because he’s a good-looking grey and also that he was a close second to The Foxes in the Dante Stakes recently (watch below).

This Irish-trained Ulyssess colt is also related to Passenger and will be looking to become only the fifth winning Derby grey.

Many feel White Birch was also getting to The Foxes last time over 1m 2 1/2f, so the longer Derby trip of 1m4f will be right up his street, while having raced that last day on good-to-form and also winning in heavy ground the Epsom conditions will be fine whatever.

Dubai Mile @ 18/1

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 6
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 3 from 6
  • Total Career Winnings: £168,218
  • Trainer: Charlie Johnston
  • Jockey: Daniel Muscutt
  • Last Run: 5th 2000 Guineas (Newmarket), 6th May 2023

Dubai Mile silks

Trainer Mark Johnston never won the Epsom Derby when his name was above the door, but he’s handed over to son Charlie now and he could have a live chance of bettering his dad in this famous race with Dubai Mile.

With six career wins he’s one of the more experienced of the 2023 Epsom Derby runners – winning three times. He’s also closely-matched with The Foxes, who he was second to in the Royal Lodge last season at Newmarket, while he also beat Arrest in France last October over 1m2f.

This will also be his first try over 1m4f, but breeding suggests it’s worth a crack and he should be spot on for this after running on well over a mile in the 2000 Guineas last time out – beaten just over 5 lengths.

We’ve also seen 5 of the last 21 Epsom Derby winners having run in the 2000 Guineas earlier that season too. Daniel Muscutt, who has ridden the horse in his last five starts continues the partnership.

Waipiro @ 28/1

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 3
  • Wins: 1
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 0 from 3
  • Total Career Winnings: £18,486
  • Trainer: Ed Walker
  • Jockey: TBC
  • Last Run: 2nd Lingfield Derby Trial (Lingfield), 13th May 2023

Waipiro silksThe Ed Walker yard will be hoping to hit the big time in Saturday’s Epsom Derby with their lightly-raced Waipiro.

This well-bred 3 year-old colt is sired by Australia, who won this famous race in 2014, so will be trying to uphold the family name in this contest.

He’s only raced three times (1 win) and is closely-matched with one of the Epsom Derby favourites Military Order after running that Godolphin horse to 1 1/4 lengths in the Lingfield Derby Trial (watch below) last time out.

That was his first try over 1m4f but stayed on well that day so the trip in the Derby will be no issue for him.
