Frankie Dettori Eyes Epsom Group One Treble After Coronation and Oaks Wins

Frankie Dettori is no stranger to hitting the headlines and that’s exactly what he’s doing at Epsom this week. The popular jockey, who is riding in his final season, won both Friday’s big Group One race – The Coronation Cup and Epsom Oaks – and is now eyeing a famous ‘big race’ treble in the Betfred Derby on Saturday.

Dettori Wins Oaks and Coronation Cup and Now Looks For Epsom Group One Treble

It was all about one man at Epsom on Friday – Frankie Dettori – as the pocket Italian jockey won both the feature races on the day.

First up was the Coronation Cup, when Dettori came with a storming run up the Epsom straight to win on Emily Upjohn, who was a narrow second in the Oaks 12 months ago. She powered clear of the 2022 Derby third Westover to give Dettori his six win in the lucrative Group One.

Then 1 hour and 20 minutes later the focus switched to the Epsom Oaks – the third English Classic of the flat season – as Frankie was booked to ride the fancied second favourite Soul Sister.

With the hot Aidan O’Brien favourite Savethelastdance not looking at home on the track and quicker ground the writing was on the wall from some way out as Frankie and Soul Sister travelled well into the race – just like she did in the Musidora Stakes at York.

She eventually powered away to dispel any stamina doubts to win by 1 3/4 lengths – Dettori’s second Group One win on the day for the Gosden yard – and his seventh Oaks win overall.

This now sets up a treble tilt of Group One Epsom wins in Saturday’s Betfred Derby.

Frankie Dettori Will Ride Arrest In The 2023 Derby

Juddmonte silks

Frankie Dettori will be hoping to say to his 2023 Epsom Derby rivals on Saturday June 3rd as the pocket Italian is set to ride the John Gosden-trained ARREST in the Betfred-sponsored Classic.

With the ‘Frankie Factor’ likely to kick-in too, there is every chance this son of Frankel (yes, there’s a lot of Franks here) could be catapulted into the 2023 Epsom Derby favourite.

Frankie also landed Friday’s Oaks on Soul Sister, so will be looking famous Epsom Double on Saturday with Arrest.

Arrest now the new Derby favourite behind Aidan O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin and the Godolphin horse Military Order in the betting market as the ‘once-a-year punters’ are latching onto Dettori’s ride after the popular jockey has already won the Oaks and Coronation Cup this week.

Frankie Will Ride In The Epsom Derby For The Final Time

Dettori will also be looking for a fairy-tale ending as this season is his final campaign in the saddle and, therefore, his last ride in the Epsom Derby. Frankie is no stranger to creating the big headlines and they will come no bigger than if he can land his third Derby this year in his swansong season.

This Derby hopeful will be looking to add to the wins of Workforce, Commander In Chief and Quest For Fame, who also won carrying the famous pink, green and while Juddmonte colours and after an easy Chester Vase win will be a big fancy.

He’s now won 3 of his 5 starts to date so hasn’t done much wrong and Frankie is also 2-from-3 on the horse. That last win at Chester was his first try upped in trip, but he saw it out well and having now won on quick and soft ground then he should be fine no matter what the weather throws at the Epsom course.

Arrest will also be trying to become the first Chester Vase winner to follow-up in the Derby since Ruler Of The World in 2013, while he’ll also be looking to provide trainer John Gosden and Dettori with their third wins each.

As mentioned, he’s a son of the legendary Frankel, who won ALL  14 career starts, and being ridden by Dettori it could be a double ‘Frankie’ party come 1:45pm on Saturday 3rd June!

Frankie Dettori Has Landed The Epsom Derby Twice Before

With a horse racing riding career that’s spanned over 30 years it’s actually slightly surprising that Frankie Dettori has only won the Epsom Derby twice.

In fact, Dettori was on a bit of a drought in the biggest of the five English Classics and had to wait until 2007 to break his duck. Authorized was the horse that got the Derby monkey off Frankie’s back, when the Peter Chapple-Hyam runner powered home by 5 lengths.

Frankie had to wait another eight years when his second Epsom Derby winner came along when he steered home Golden Horn. This 3 year-old was also trained by John Gosden, so Dettori will be hoping to team up with his biggest supporter over the years in 2023 in what will be his final ride in the fourth English Classic.
