Dating back to the reign of King Henry VIII, Chester is also the smallest track in England. Officially starting in 1539 following England’s break with Rome and during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the Reformation Period, some sources say horse racing at Chester goes even further back to 1512.

Configuration of Chester Races Today
A full circuit of the course is only just over a mile (between 8 and 9 furlongs) round, and there are no chutes or straights on it, just an incredibly short run-in. Unlike other venues, Chester races today don’t suit galloping types as it’s a very tight, turning track where horses run left-handed.
Hard by a bend in the River Dee, Chester Racecourse has both that natural obstacle and a manmade one preventing expansion. A viaduct carrying a railway line that runs into the city centre towers above horses as they turn out of the home straight and on to the side of the track. It is Flat horse racing only on The Roodee with events on from May to September.
The Chester May Festival, where various trials from The Oaks and Epsom Derby take place, is the only major meeting at the course. Despite being completely flat due to its position on the floodplain of the River Dee, some racehorse trainers believe the turns of The Roodee help prepare their thoroughbreds for the rigours of Epsom Downs.

Without question the biggest races at Chester today, the Boodles May Festival takes place as its name suggests in May. Traditionally held in the first or second full week of the month on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, this meeting follows the end of the British jumps season and Punchestown Festival in Ireland.
