Does The Shishkin Horse Profile Fit The Newcastle Rehearsal Chase Trends?

Shishkin drifts in the King George betting after refusing to race

Shishkin, who refused to race at Ascot last weekend, is back in action this Saturday as trainer Nicky Henderson has confirmed his quirky chaser for Newcastle’s Rehearsal Chase. However, horse racing fans are expected to be wary of betting on him after his Ascot antics plus he’ll also have a massive weight to carry. So, does the Shishkin horse profile tick the Rehearsal Chase trends, or will be plant himself at the start again?

Shishkin Confirmed For 2023 Rehearsal Chase But Will Have To Lump 12t Round

Joe and Marie Donnelly silks12 months ago we saw the Venetia Williams-trained L’Homme Presse carry 12st to victory in Saturday’s Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle and that’s exactly what Nicky Henderson’s Shishkin will be trying to replicate.

After refusing to race last weekend at the start of the 1965 Ascot Chase (watch below), connections of Shishkin are keen to get him back on the track as quickly as possible with the Boxing Day King George VI Chase at Kempton still very much a target.

Henderson said after the Ascot race he wasn’t sure what got into his horse Shishkin, but was in a bit of a mood all day and would still be there now if given the chance.

But the Seven Barrows handler also hinted that he didn’t want to be heading straight to Kempton and the King George without trying him again – saying it wouldn’t be nice if he did a similar thing on Boxing Day.

Most Of The Horses Shishkin Takes On Will Be Running From Out Of The Handicap

The crazy thing about Shishkin’s entry in Saturday’s Rehearsal Chase is that being rated 173 most of the others will have to race from out of the handicap. Shishkin is a horse that is normally seen in top Grade One races, but now into a handicap has to give a lot of weight away to the others to make it a fair race.

If running, the second highest-rated in the field is GA Law off a mark of 152 and a full 21lbs lower than Shishkin.

Therefore, Saturday’s inclusion in Newcastle’s Rehearsal Chase, where he’ll travel up with the Champion Hurdle winner Constitution Hill, will be more of a test if jockey Nico De Boinville can get him to start, more than anything else.

The best horse racing betting sites are still making Shishkin the betting favourite, but you feel many punters might prefer this time to see if he starts the race – so in-play wagering here might be on the rise.

Henderson’s only previous win in the Rehearsal Chase came in 2017 with Beware The Bear.

If Shishkin can get back on track, then it will be all systems go toward the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day, where he’s 7/1 with the best online gambling sites.
