Established at Gosforth Park in the early 1880s, Newcastle Racecourse is quite different today with horse racing on Tyneside certainly predating that. The Northumberland Plate is even older than the course, going back to at least 1833.
That is the biggest Flat event among Newcastle races today and holds Heritage Handicap status. Part of a two-day meeting towards the end of June, Newcastle switched to an All-Weather Flat track from turf in 2016. The course is also home to a Grade 1 National Hunt event, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle.
Configuration of Newcastle Races Today
There are both All-Weather and Jumps fixtures at this fair track. The big National Hunt events are the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in November, the first Grade 1 race of its type en route to the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, and Eider Chase in February, which is considered a trial for the Grand National at Aintree.
The round course, both All-Weather and turf, has a circuit of about a mile-and-three-quarters. There is an uphill finish to the left-handed track. Newcastle Racecourse today also has a straight mile All-Weather course with the final four furlongs on the ascent.
For steeplechases, there are open ditches in both the back straight (the second of five fences) and home straight (first in a line of four). There is a short run-in from the back of the final hurdle or fence to the finish line. Horses have to get that last jump right, then, because there isn’t much time to recover from blunders or mistakes.
Biggest Events at Newcastle Races Today & Throughout the Year
Newcastle Racecourse’s four biggest race meetings are spread throughout the annual horse racing calendar. From the Eider Chase day in February to the Fighting Fifth card in late November (which can even fall in December), this is one of the busiest racecourses in the UK, because the Flat horse racing fixtures can take place in any conditions.
Newcastle is also now the host venue for the All-Weather Finals day on Good Friday during at the start of the four-day Easter weekend. These are the championship races following a number of qualifiers on artificial surfaces.
