Ascot races today

Dating back to the end of the Stuart dynasty ruling Britain, Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. Something of a horse racing fanatic, the story goes that she left Windsor Castle to ride out one day and came across Ascot Common. This in her view was an ideal heath for exercising horses on. Ascot races today take place on the same land, so one of the finest racecourses and most iconic venues in the sport was born.

Over the next three centuries, Ascot Racecourse has developed some fantastic horse racing action as it’s become the premier dual purpose track in the UK. Hosting eight National Hunt meetings over jumps between October / November and March, with some 18 Flat racing days between April and October, it is one of the busiest courses in the British Isles.

As the home of Royal Ascot, widely regarded as the most prestigious event in the UK Flat horse racing calendar, the track is also where QIPCO British Champions Day is held in October. Major races at Ascot today include the Clarence House Chase, Champion Stakes and King George. There are 13 Group 1 events at Ascot Racecourse in a calendar year with the majority concentrated at the Royal meeting. The course is also home to three Grade 1 jumps races in December, January and February respectively.

Configuration of Ascot Races Today

Whether jumping hurdles or fences, or racing on the level, horses go right-handed around Ascot Racecourse. Besides a stiff straight mile for Flat contests up to that distance like at Newbury races across Berkshire, the round course is more like a triangle in shape and the best part of a mile-and-three-quarters for a complete circuit.

Ascot races today are a real test for horses as the track suits galloping types. There is a separate chute for the round or Old Mile start with some earlier races, particularly those for three-year-olds, still using that instead of the straight course. Ascot could hardly be more different from nearby Windsor races, which twists and turns in a figure of eight.

The hurdles course is on the inside with two flights on the run down to Swinley Bottom. From that lowest part of Ascot Racecourse, all races are uphill all the way to the winning post. There are two more hurdles in the back straight and as many after turning for home making six in total. Steeplechase races at Ascot today include 10 fences on a complete circuit.

Of those, there are two open ditches – the third of four heading down to Swinley Bottom and the penultimate of the next four before the home turn. There is a relatively short run-in of two-and-a-half furlongs for Flat races once around the final bend with even less distance from the last two of fences up the home straight to the line.

Clarence House Chase Day

Proceeding chronologically through the calendar year, the first major meeting of Ascot races today is the Clarence House Chase card on a Saturday in mid-January. The highlight race on this day was run as a handicap until 2007 when it became a Grade 1. Past Clarence House Chase winners include Desert Orchid, Viking Flagship, Well Chief,  Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre, Un De Sceaux, Altior and Shishkin.

Besides a couple of valuable handicaps alluding to its past, the chief supporting race on this day is a Grade 2 staying hurdles contest, the Warfield Mares’ Hurdle, made famous by one-time Grand National runner-up Magic Of Light, who won it twice. Here are all the details of the big races from the Clarence House Chase card:

Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday

Much like the Clarence House meeting, Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday on a Saturday in mid-February sees the best National Hunt horses split between Haydock races and competing in Berkshire. A Premier Handicap horse race in the Swinley Chase gives Aintree hopefuls an alternative race to the official Grand National trial on the same day.

With the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase also acting as trial for Cheltenham Festival contenders, the Ascot Chase is a valuable prize in its own right. Previous winners of this Grade 1 include Monet’s Garden, Kauto Star, Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti. This is the essential info about the main races on the Ascot Chase card:

Royal Ascot Trials Day

Falling on either the last Wednesday in April or first in May, Royal Ascot Trials Day is an opportunity for thoroughbreds to gain valuable course experience and Flat action before the big meeting. As Ascot races today go, this has a low key feel and clashes with the Punchestown Festival in Ireland. Royal Ascot Trials Day is also scheduled in the same week as the Guineas Festival at Newmarket.

Official trials for the Ascot Gold Cup in the Sagaro Stakes, Commonwealth Cup thanks to the Pavilion Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes courtesy of the Paradise Stakes all happen on this card. There are also juvenile races for colts and fillies respectively ahead of the big two-year-old events at the Royal meeting. Check out the main Royal Ascot Trials Day events on track here:

King George at Ascot

During midsummer, Ascot Racecourse has another fantastic racing fixture just over a month after the Royal meeting. The two-day King George Weekend is either on the penultimate or last Friday and Saturday of July, depending on when Glorious Goodwood races fall the following week. Everything builds to the Group 1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes here.

This 1m 4f contest is the first time that three-year-olds can tackle their elders over the Epsom Derby distance at the highest level. If horses stay in training aged four and up, it is possible to have Classic winners from different generations colliding at Ascot races today here. Here are all the races on both cards across the two days of King George Weekend:

King George Weekend Friday – Brown Jack Handicap

The opening day of King George Weekend is very handicap heavy with five of the six races being such. In-between Glorious Goodwood and the big York races today at the Ebor Festival, Ascot Racecourse hosts the Shergar Cup in August. This is a team event, usually based on the nationality of the jockeys and female riders also enter a team. Points are awarded based on the finishing position of horses in the races, which are all run as handicaps. This is the full Shergar Cup card at Ascot races today, so you know all about the event:

Autumn Racing Weekend

At Ascot races today, there can be as many as three meetings in the month of October. Prior to QIPCO British Champions Day and the London Gold Cup card, there is the Autumn Racing Weekend on the first Friday and Saturday. The opening day of this meeting only has the Noel Murless Stakes of note. That means the final day’s card is loaded with Listed and Group 3 action including the Cumberland Lodge Stakes and Bengough Stakes. Here is everything going on at Ascot Racecourse during that Saturday:

Autumn Racing Weekend Saturday Races Class of Race Type of Race Distance

QIPCO British Champions Day

On the middle Saturday of October, 13 days after Europe’s richest race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, we celebrate the best of UK Flat thoroughbreds and crown champion race horses. That is what QIPCO British Champions Day is all about. A series of championship races, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile and QIPCO Champion Stakes at ten furlongs, part of the British Champions Series take place on the card.

The only issue with these races at Ascot today is the ground, which often comes up softer than ideal for those who like sounder surfaces. In the event of heavy ground, races on the round course switch to the inner track used for hurdle races in the winter. QIPCO British Champions Day happens towards the end of the British Flat turf season for obvious reasons, but don’t be surprised if there are some shock results on the card that you can see in full here:

Race Times QIPCO British Champions Day Races Class of Race Type of Race Distance
1:15 British Champions Long Distance Cup Group 2 3yo+ Flat Race 2m
1:50 British Champions Sprint Stakes Group 1 3yo+ Flat Race 6f

3:45 QIPCO Champion Stakes Group 1 3yo+ Flat Race 1m 2f
4:25 Balmoral Handicap Class 2 3yo+ Flat Handicap 1m

November Racing Weekend at Ascot Racecourse

On the penultimate or last Friday and Saturday in November, the two-day November Racing Weekend takes place. While the opening day of the meeting is low key, it still throws up horses to follow. This is the Friday action from the November Racing Weekend:

Ascot Coral Hurdle & 1965 Chase Day

Two longstanding Ascot races today follow-on for the Saturday of the November Racing Weekend. These are the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle (registered as the Ascot Hurdle) and 1965 Chase at this track. Both are early core jump season tests for National Hunt horses over intermediate trips. Previous winners of the Ascot Coral Hurdle include Dawn Run, Morley Street, Baracouda, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power and Faugheen.

The 1965 Chase, meanwhile, celebrates the year that jumps races were introduced at this venue. Wayward Lad, Albertas Run, Master Minded and Al Ferof are all on its roll of honour. This event was also the race where Cyrname defeated Altior to end his unbeaten record streak of consecutive wins over obstacles.

Supporting that pair of Grade 2 races is the Hurst Park Handicap Chase, which honours a nearby former racecourse. In 1965, Hurst Park closed and their jumps meetings transferred to Ascot Racecourse. This ensured greater use of the site. These are all the important races from the Ascot Coral Hurdle card and day two of the November Racing Weekend:

From Cheltenham trials like the Noel Novices’ Chase to valuable handicaps like the Betfair Exchange Trophy, there’s something for every punter at this festive fixture before thoughts turn to Kempton races and the King George VI Chase.

Howden Christmas Racing Weekend Friday – Noel Novices’ Chase

A low key start to the meeting using to contain an official trial for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. The Grade 2 Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle has been removed from the programme of Ascot races today, however, so the 2m 3f Noel Novices’ Chase tops the bill. Supporting this on the Friday of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend is a Listed bumper or National Hunt Flat race where the horses don’t jump any obstacles. Check out every race from day 1 below:

A Grade 1 since 1990, past winners include Lanzarote, Baracouda, Big Buck’s, Reve De Sivola and Paisley Park.
