Dating back to the end of the Stuart dynasty ruling Britain, Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. Something of a horse racing fanatic, the story goes that she left Windsor Castle to ride out one day and came across Ascot Common. This in her view was an ideal heath for exercising horses on. Ascot races today take place on the same land, so one of the finest racecourses and most iconic venues in the sport was born.
Over the next three centuries, Ascot Racecourse has developed some fantastic horse racing action as it’s become the premier dual purpose track in the UK. Hosting eight National Hunt meetings over jumps between October / November and March, with some 18 Flat racing days between April and October, it is one of the busiest courses in the British Isles.
As the home of Royal Ascot, widely regarded as the most prestigious event in the UK Flat horse racing calendar, the track is also where QIPCO British Champions Day is held in October. Configuration of Ascot Races Today
Whether jumping hurdles or fences, or racing on the level, horses go right-handed around Ascot Racecourse. Besides a stiff straight mile for Flat contests up to that distance like at Newbury races across Berkshire, the round course is more like a triangle in shape and the best part of a mile-and-three-quarters for a complete circuit.
Ascot races today are a real test for horses as the track suits galloping types. There is a separate chute for the round or Old Mile start with some earlier races, particularly those for three-year-olds, still using that instead of the straight course. Ascot could hardly be more different from nearby Windsor races, which twists and turns in a figure of eight.
The hurdles course is on the inside with two flights on the run down to Swinley Bottom. From that lowest part of Ascot Racecourse, all races are uphill all the way to the winning post. There are two more hurdles in the back straight and as many after turning for home making six in total. Steeplechase races at Ascot today include 10 fences on a complete circuit.
Of those, there are two open ditches – the third of four heading down to Swinley Bottom and the penultimate of the next four before the home turn. There is a relatively short run-in of two-and-a-half furlongs for Flat races once around the final bend with even less distance from the last two of fences up the home straight to the line.

Much like the Clarence House meeting, Ascot Chase day on a Saturday in mid-February sees the best National Hunt horses split between Haydock races and competing in Berkshire. A Premier Handicap horse race in the Swinley Chase gives Aintree hopefuls an alternative race to the official Grand National trial on the same day.

Falling on either the last Wednesday in April or first in May, Royal Ascot Trials Day is an opportunity for Flat thoroughbreds to gain valuable course experience before the big meeting. As Ascot races today go, this has a low key feel and clashes with the Punchestown Festival in Ireland. Royal Ascot Trials Day is also scheduled in the same week as the Guineas Festival at Newmarket.

During midsummer, Ascot Racecourse has another fantastic racing fixture just over a month after the Royal meeting. The two-day King George Weekend is either on the penultimate or last Friday and Saturday of July, depending on when Glorious Goodwood races fall the following week. On the middle Saturday of October, 13 days after Europe’s richest race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, we celebrate the best of UK Flat thoroughbreds and crown champion race horses. That is what QIPCO British Champions Day is all about. A series of championship races, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile and QIPCO Champion Stakes at ten furlongs, part of the British Champions Series take place on the card.
The only issue with these races at Ascot today is the ground, which often comes up softer than ideal for those who like sounder surfaces. In the event of heavy ground, races on the round course switch to the inner track used for hurdle races in the winter. Two longstanding Ascot races today follow-on for the Saturday of the November Racing Weekend. These are the Coral Hurdle (registered as the Ascot Hurdle) and 1965 Chase at this track. Both hold Grade 2 status and are early core jump season tests for National Hunt horses over intermediate trips. Previous winners of the Ascot Coral Hurdle include Dawn Run, Morley Street, Baracouda, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power and Faugheen.
The 1965 Chase, meanwhile, celebrates the year that jumps races were introduced at this venue. Wayward Lad, Albertas Run, Master Minded and Al Ferof are all on its roll of honour. There are two prestigious races and Group 1s on the penultimate day of Royal Ascot. These are the Commonwealth Cup, a sprint for three-year-old colts and fillies, and the Coronation Stakes, a round mile contest for three-year-old fillies. Our 1965 Chase Tips
Last season’s Ascot Chase hero Shishkin heads across Berkshire from Lambourn for his reappearance in the 2m 5f Grade 2 1965 Chase. Nicky Henderson’s stable star has some big staying chase targets to come later in the campaign, but indications are he runs here rather than in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.
Shishkin is 2-2 around Ascot, winning the 2022 Clarence House in his famous duel with Energumene before last term’s course and distance romp. He routed re-opposing rival Pic D’Orhy by some 16 lengths that day, so there’s no reason why the nine-year-old Sholokhov gelding shouldn’t confirm form off the same terms.
Pic D’Orhy Booked for Second Spot
Like Shishkin, Pic D’Orhy went on to win a Grade 1 during the Grand National Festival at Aintree in the spring. A marked improver for champion trainer Paul Nicholls last term, this eight-year-old son of Turgeon landed consecutive Grade 2s before chasing home his main market rival here in the Ascot Chase in February.
Barring accidents, another duel between them off level weights, should see Shishkin home and hosed in front. If he doesn’t fire, though, then Pic D’Orhy is the only runner anywhere near the Seven Barrows inmate on official ratings. Harry Cobden riding at Ascot, rather than going up to Haydock to partner Bravemansgame, is interesting.
Minella Drama Best of the Rest
Jeremy Scott veteran Dashel Drasher looks vulnerable to younger legs and in very deep waters here. Course winner Thunder Rock comes here off the back of a Listed success at Carlisle and is a potential improver, but has to give weight to Minella Drama. With trainer Donald McCain now in better form, this eight-year-old Flemensfirth gelding should come on for his reappearance.
That came up at Aintree in this grade in the Old Roan. Minella Drama conceded 9lb to the winner and has always had a tendency to jump right. That is no problem at Ascot. There is obviously something to find with Pic D’Orhy on their Melling Chase encounter, but Minella Drama does meet that one off 6lb better terms.
