We have Victorian businessman S. H. Hyde to thank for Kempton Park races today. Six years after he leased the grounds of Kempton Manor, the seat of a feudal lord recorded in the Domesday Book, this excellent horse racing venue opened in Sunbury-on-Thames in 1878. This followed on from the first Sandown races, another Park track five miles northwest near Hampton Court Palace outside Esher, in 1875.
The Greater London area became well-populated with the racecourses from the Georgian era onwards, starting the trend begun by Queen Anne with Ascot. Much like Sandown and Epsom races on the Downs 13 miles to the southeast, Kempton Park became a successful venue within easy reach of the metropolis.
Easter used to be its big fixture with races like the Roseberry Stakes and Queen’s Prize, which live on to this day, plus official Classic trials for the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. The growth of other tracks mean Kempton races today no longer include those in their programme. The jumps course for National Hunt events was added later.
Kempton Park Racecourse closed between 2005 and 2006 for the installation of a new polytrack All-Weather surface, like they used to have at Wolverhampton races, which changed its Flat racing presence.. Floodlights were also added, so evening or twilight cards could be staged during the winter months as well as the jumps. There is horse racing here all year round, so it’s a busy track.
The Jockey Club Racecourses
Kempton Park is one of The Jockey Club Racecourses. There are 14 of these in England in total including other tracks close to Sunbury-on-Thames. Some are further afield, however, as far and wide from Greater London as Cumbria, Devon and East Anglia in different directions. Discover more about these tracks owned by The Jockey Club here:
Configuration of Kempton Park Races Today
The All-Weather course at Kempton has two loops to it. A right-handed, sharp track like the jumps circuit, the home straight isn’t even long enough for the shortest sprints. That means all Flat races at Kempton today go around a bend. The inner loop is used for events over five furlongs and a mile-and-a-quarter off that shorter run-in, while contests of other distances use the outer loop.
Kempton Park’s National Hunt horse racing track, meanwhile, is triangular in shape rather than an oval. Also very flat, a complete circuit over jumps is about a mile and five furlongs. There are six obstacles on the hurdles track, two each down the side of the course, in the back straight and home straight. There’s a run-in of about a furlong from the final flight.
Steeplechasers at Kempton races today jump nine fences on a circuit, meanwhile. The last of two down the side of the course and third of four in the back straight are open ditches. There are three plains fences after turning for home. The King George VI Chase start just around the All-Weather bend following the winning post means every fence is taken twice.

Christmas Festival at Kempton
The major horse racing meeting of all Kempton races today happens immediately after Christmas across Boxing Day and the day after. Given the time of year when this two-day gala takes place, it’s called the Christmas Festival. Boxing Day itself is huge in the British horse racing calendar but all eyes are on Sunbury-on-Thames for the King George.
While that feature contest tests National Hunt thoroughbreds’ stamina, the 27 December races at Kempton today see a couple of 2m steeplechases as headline acts. These are the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase and Desert Orchid Chase. There is more on each day of the Christmas Festival below…
Kempton Races Boxing Day
The most important card at Kempton Park races today is on Boxing Day. This jumps fixture contains three Grade 1 races in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase that honours a prolific winner at the course, Christmas Hurdle and King George VI Chase. The latter is the middle leg of the Stayers Chase Triple Crown. Horses that win the Betfair Chase at Haydock races can bid to follow-up at Kempton.
Although this is a very different test to Merseyside, that hasn’t dissuaded trainers from trying it. The third and final leg is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the blue riband event of steeplechasing. Kempton races on Boxing Day are loaded with the best action on the opening day of a two-day meeting.
Punters should note that the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle over 3m, traditionally run at Ascot races, has moved to Kempton on Boxing Day as a one-off in 2022. These are the six traditional races on the card:

Beloved grey Desert Orchid was the most popular racehorse in training during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Until Kauto Star came along, he held the record for the most wins in the King George with four victories. A race honouring him headlines the 27 December card at Kempton races today, supported by the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase.
That horse also knew what it took to win the King George VI Chase and punters will notice how the track likes nothing better than naming its graded events after past equine legends. While there is often more focus on Chepstow races on 27 December as the Welsh Grand National takes place on this day, the Kempton card can’t be ignored either. Here it is in full:

There are other important races at Kempton today in the National Hunt code with graded events aplenty during meetings in January and February. Many of these serve as trials for Cheltenham Festival hopefuls looking to throw their hats into the ring for major honours in March. Let’s take a look at each of these race days in turn:
Lanzarote Hurdle Day
The second Saturday in January sees the Kempton card headlined by one of its big betting races, the Lanzarote Hurdle over 2m 5f. Supporting this is the Grade 2 Silviniaco Conti Chase named after another modern era King George hero. This is the card in full:
Lanzarote Hurdle Day Races Class of Race Type of Race Race Distance Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle Class 4 4yo Hurdle Race 2m Novices’ Hurdle Class 3 5yo+ Hurdle Race 3m ½f 0-145 Handicap Chase Class 2 5yo+ Handicap Chase 3m Silviniaco Conti Chase Grade 2 5yo+ Steeplechase 2m 4½f Lanzarote Hurdle Class 2 4yo+ Handicap Hurdle 2m 5f 0-140 Handicap Chase Class 3 5yo+ Handicap Chase 2m 4½f 0-140 Handicap Hurdle Class 3 4yo+ Handicap Hurdle 2m Coral Trophy Day
The last set of proper Festival trials take place here in late February with a juvenile hurdle, novice hurdle and novice chase that honours Pendil (a great steeplechaser of the 1970s) on the card of Kempton Park races today. These shape Cheltenham odds and no mistake. The big betting race, however, is the Coral Trophy – a Premier Handicap over the King George course and distance. Here are all the races you can expect to see at Kempton Park on this date:

There are three Listed events of the National Hunt code that happen at Kempton Park Racecourse in addition to the above that punters should be aware of. On the penultimate Sunday in October, early in the core part of the jumps season, there are 2m novice and open hurdle races to give horses a starting point. The Kempton Mares’ Hurdle over an extended 3m, meanwhile, takes place in November.
All-Weather Flat Races at Kempton Today
Kempton Park retains some of its Flat racing fixtures and programme from its days as a turf track for the All-Weather. The course hosts two of a handful of races run on an artificial surface to hold group status like Newcastle races today with a couple of events on its Northumberland Plate meeting. These Group 3s at Kempton are the September Stakes over a mile-and-a-half and Sirenia Stakes for two-year-olds.
Another All-Weather venue south of London, Lingfield Park races also have this level of competition including the Winter Derby. By and large, the programme of Kempton races today are Listed events and lower grade with a couple of handicaps with considerable history in the Roseberry Stakes and Queen’s Prize. This is the best of the All-Weather action at the track:
September Sizzler
While Easter used to be the most prestigious race day on the Flat at Kempton Park, that has changed since the turf track was replaced with an artificial surface. Their feature meeting is the September Sizzler on the first or second Saturday in the month after the summer holidays end. These are all the Kempton races today on this card:

Our September Stakes Tips
Israr, September Stakes, Kempton (9 Sept, 1:35)Based on the authoritative way in which Israr beat Adayar in Group 2 company last time out, he appeals to give weight all-round to his rivals and follow-up under a penalty in the 1m 4f Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton Park. John & Thady Gosden’s four-year-old Muhaarar colt makes his All-Weather debut here.
Only a smart filly in the subsequently retired Haskoy was a short-head too good for Israr when runner-up on reappearance in the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes at Newbury. He then bumped into the Goodwood Cup hero Quickthorn over further in a Listed event at York.
Israr produced a career-best in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes during the July Festival the last day. He routed an Epsom Derby winner off level weights. While this is a challenge under a penalty, the favourite against Israr may also be on the wane like Adayar. He is thus the value bet.
Bay Bridge heads the market now stepping up in trip and down in grade. Sir Michael Stoute’s five-year-old son of New Bay was a poor fifth in the Prince Of Wales at Royal Ascot, but has been given a break since. Connections now lower their sights. Kempton is one of the easiest tracks in the UK to get a mile-and-a-half on too.
Going up in distance isn’t an obvious way forward based on how Bay Bridge has shaped this term. He is the class act and ratings topper in the line-up off a mark of 121, though. A revival isn’t impossible by any means, but Bay Bridge is opposed on price alone.
The Gosdens’ newcomer Fortino brings top South American form to the table. A Group 1 winner on turf and dirt at 1m 3f and 1m 4f, this four-year-old Midshipman colt is a fascinating recruit to one of the top stables in the country. Fortino starts off bottom weight on the All-Weather and has the third best official rating in the line-up.
If he hasn’t adjusted following his transatlantic switch, there are three previous course and distance winners in the line-up. Candleford is favoured of those in the market, but Shandoz could outrun his odds after coming third in the Geoffrey Freer following a lengthy lay-off.
