Goodwood Cup Principals Among Lonsdale Cup Runners

It’s a rematch from the Glorious meeting between Quickthorn, who made all here 12 months ago, and those who gave him too much rope in Sussex. The tactics are pretty simple. Marquand sets his stall out on this horse to make all the running. The question is whether the jockeys riding re-opposing rivals and other Lonsdale Cup runners have learned their lesson from Goodwood races or not.

Surprise Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami comes here looking for compensation after being caught too far back the last day. It’s revealing that all of the leading horse racing betting sites have the Gosden runner close to Quickthorn and old rival Coltrane towards the head of their market. 1. Courage Mon Ami

Sensational improvement to go from Goodwood 1m 6f handicap success on reappearance to Gold Cup glory at Royal Ascot on quick ground. Caught too far back on softer surface at the Glorious meeting latest and weakened into sixth. More galloping track should suit. Firmly in the mix if ridden more positively.

2. Quickthorn

Can be hard to catch from the front and proved that over course and distance with 14-length romp in this race last year. Enhanced course record with Listed success on penultimate start, then another six-length success in the Goodwood Cup latest making all. Bang up there with other Lonsdale Cup runners in the betting.

3. Broome

Concerted effort to reinvent him as a stayer this year. Unlucky third in the Yorkshire Cup her on return from Middle East where triumphed in valuable Dubai Gold Cup. Non-stayer in Ascot Gold Cup and ground against him in Goodwood Cup latest. Return to a sounder surface a plus, but hasn’t run up to his lofty rating in the UK for over a year.

4. Coltrane

Best of the rest behind Quickthorn in this race 12 months ago. Came out and won another Cup at Doncaster races before pushing Trueshan all the way on British Champions Day last autumn. Ascot Group 3 winner on reappearance, then Gold Cup runner-up there at the Royal meeting. Turned that form around when third to Quickthorn in the Goodwood Cup latest. One of the Lonsdale Cup runners with every chance and stays further.

5. Giavellotto

Course winner and kept the race when landing the Yorkshire Cup on first UK start of the year. Saw that form reversed, however, when only fifth in the Goodwood Cup latest. Something to find with the market principals, but does get weight from some of them.

6. Nate The Great

Fifth in Sagaro Stakes and Gold Cup at Ascot races either side of neck second in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown this year. On these terms, he’s clearly got a lot to find to even land a blow. Stable companion of Coltrane, so other Lonsdale Cup runners appeal more.

7. River Of Stars

Sole filly in line-up, but course winner when just getting up to land a Group 3 on reappearance. Close second in the Prix Maurice de Nieuil in France before filling same spot in Lillie Langtry on heavy ground latest. Wouldn’t be a huge surprise if she outran her odds receiving weight all-round.
