A Brief History of Doncaster Racecourse

Doncaster races today

Despite the town corporation best’s efforts to stop race meetings at the dawn of the 17th century, Doncaster Racecourse was marked out in 1614. Records show horse racing on Town Moor taking place since the 1500s, the 16th century. Another nearby venue, Cantley Common, was also used including for the first decade of the Doncaster Cup (then Doncaster Gold Cup) since its inauguration in 1766.

A dozen years later, the biggest of Doncaster races today, the St Leger Stakes was first held on Town Moor and has remained there ever since. Going all the way back to its inauguration in 1776, this is the oldest Classic Flat racing event for three-year-old colts and fillies in the world. The St Leger predates the Epsom Derby, The Oaks and the Newmarket Classics, the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

Doncaster Racecourse is one of nine race tracks and racecourses for horse racing within the historic boundaries of the White Rose county of Yorkshire. Of those, it is the only one in South Yorkshire with Beverley in the East Riding, Pontefract and Wetherby in the West, and Catterick Bridge, Redcar, Ripon, Thirsk and York races in the North.

Configuration of Doncaster Races Today

Best described as pear shaped, Doncaster Racecourse hosts both Flat racing from March until November and National Hunt action during the winter months. Home to the Lincoln Handicap since 1965 when Lincoln Racecourse closed, there is a straight mile track used for that race and the Group 1 Kameko Futurity Trophy for two-year-olds.

A left-handed but fairly flat track that suits strong galloping types, there are some similarities with Newbury races as a full circuit of the round course is almost two miles long. The St Leger is virtually one full lap of Doncaster starting at the beginning of the back straight, then turning down the side of the course up Rose Hill and round the home bend onto a run-in of four-and-a-half furlongs.

Thee are seven obstacles on the hurdles track with three in the back straight. There is also a cross hurdle about a mile from the finish and three more in the home straight with a very short run-in after the final flight. Steeplechasers at Doncaster races today have 11 fences to jump on a complete circuit, meanwhile.

The third of four in the back straight and middle one of three on Rose Hill are open ditches. There are four plain fences jumped in about half-a-mile down the long home straight. A water jump roughly adjacent to the St Leger start at the top of the back straight ensures there are a variety of obstacles on a full circuit of chase course, and this makes for a fair test.

Key Doncaster Racecourse Events & Fixtures

There are now seven key and prestigious racing meetings in the horse racing calendar held on Town Moor. Due to a shift in the pattern races over jumps away from Doncaster in recent years, the majority of these are for the Flat racing season. The biggest event is the four-day St Leger Festival in September, which now runs from Thursday to Sunday in the middle of the month.

Away from the biggest race at Doncaster Racecourse, there are two more important meetings in the autumn. These are a two-day fixture headlined by the Kameko Futurity Trophy, a Group 1 for two-year-olds in October, and the Flat Grand Finale a couple of weeks later.

Doncaster races today are also the scene of the beginning of the Flat turf since with the Lincoln Handicap card happening in late March or early April. Key jumps horse races, meanwhile, remain the Great Yorkshire Chase that has Premier Handicap status and is run in late January, plus the Grimthorpe Chase either at the end of February or beginning of March.

Great Yorkshire Chase Weekend

The last Saturday in January is the biggest of racedays over jumps for Doncaster horse racing today. Headlining this card is the SBK Great Yorkshire Chase, a three-mile handicap race run until 2024 as the Sky Bet Chase for sponsorship reasons. A Premier Handicap over three miles, there are 18 fences for steeplechasers to jump.

Supporting the feature contest are two Grade 2 races at Doncaster today. Two of those are recognised Cheltenham Festival trials, which is fitting. Dating back to 1948, the Great Yorkshire Chase takes place on the same day as the official Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham Racecourse. These are all the main races from the card:

Lincoln Handicap Day

One of the special things about Doncaster races today is the venue hosts both the first and last days of the British Flat turf season. Kicking things off on the last Saturday in March is the Lincoln Handicap card. Like many Heritage Handicaps including the Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr races today, the Lincoln for older horses over the straight mile has a consolation race for horses balloted out of the maximum field of 22.

The supporting card contains a couple of Listed races that help sprinters and milers tune up for bigger targets later in the spring or early summer. The Brocklesby Stakes, meanwhile, is the first juvenile Flat race of the year with two-year-olds sprinting along Town Moor. Here are details of all the important races from Lincoln Handicap day:

These are the Champagne Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings, and the Park Stakes with both over seven furlongs. The showpiece race, the St Leger itself follows and has a number of key trials at other major meetings over the summer like Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the York Ebor Festival.

This last of the British Classics currently enjoys sponsorship from Betfred, who have also partnered The Derby and The Oaks. Kameko Futurity Trophy Meeting

The Kameko Futurity Trophy is the other contest at Doncaster races today with Group 1 status. Known by many previous names including the Timeform Gold Cup and Racing Post Trophy, this juvenile contest over the straight mile in October has implications for the future. The race has proved a good Classic trial for the following season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket races, especially in recent years.

As the feature race of a two-day meeting towards the end of October, the Kameko Futurity Trophy takes place after British Champions Day at Ascot. This is the final Group 1 of the UK Flat turf season but not the last meeting on grass. The table below contains key races from across the Friday and Saturday cards:

Kameko Futurity Trophy Meeting Race Names Class of Race Type of Race Race Distance

Virgin Bet Grand Finale of the British Flat Season

Concluding Flat turf action on Town Moor is a fitting place for it to end in November. This is because Doncaster races today both top and tail the season for that code. The November Handicap over a mile-and-a-half is the big betting race, but here is the entire Saturday card pencilled in each year on the second weekend of that month:

Chocolate Family Fun Day at Doncaster Racecourse – Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase

Although it’s fair to say there are more prestigious races on Town Moor than those held in-between Christmas and New Year, one thing the track has embraced in more recent years is its programme for fillies and mares. The horse racing fixture three days after boxing day has a Listed event for them over fences. This is the Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase run at an extended two-and-a-half mile. Here is the entire card:

Other Races at Doncaster Today

There are also other notable events at Doncaster outside of the main race fixtures. As noted above in late February or early March, the Grimthorpe Chase – an old Grand National trial – happens on Town Moor. This an alternative to the official Grand National Trial at Haydock Park in February where the ground is often very testing. The Grimthorpe gives Aintree hopefuls the chance of potentially better going.

Other noteworthy races at Doncaster today include a couple of National Hunt meetings on Town Moor in December either side of Christmas too. Check out the best of the rest of horse racing events taking place at Doncaster Racecourse in the table below:

Malystic E/W logo

Malystic E/W

Homme Public, 2m Handicap Chase, Doncaster (2 March, 2:35)

While Homme Public may have been fortunate to win the official Arkle Trial in November, he remains well-treated now going back left-handed for the 2m handicap chase on Grimthorpe day at Doncaster. Trained by Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero, this seven-year-old Cokoriko gelding is only 1lb higher in the weights.

Although Homme Public inherited the lead when JPR One unseated after the final fence, he jumped round. That’s the name of the game regardless of whether you’re a novice or a seasoned handicapper. Homme Public now takes on those in open company for the first time but, if the topweight runs, he’s the last one not running from out of the weights and open to the most progress in this sphere.

Tommy’s Oscar Out for More Success Here

Like the ante post favourite, Tommy’s Oscar is a Grade 2-winning novice chaser. Owned by Ian Hamilton and trained by his wife Ann, this popular nine-year-old son of Oscar has seen his last two wins come off 153 and 152. His current mark of 154 should be about right, then.

Tommy’s Oscar bested prolific Ascot handicap winner Boothill in the final edition of the Lightning Novices’ Chase held on Town Moor last season before it moved to Lingfield this term. With that course and distance form to his name, and not appearing to stay further at Musselburgh the last day, Tommy’s Oscar is a threat back in Yorkshire.

Malystic Each Way Value with Eye-Catching Jockey Booking

The other previous course and distance winner entered is Malystic for Peter Niven. This 10-year-old Malinas gelding is off the same successful mark that he bested subsequent Clarence House Chase hero Elixir De Nutz off at Ayr last spring. As the runner-up has since won graded events, the form cannot be ignored.

Malystic was only third on Great Yorkshire Chase day bidding to win the same race he did here the previous January. He was only beaten three lengths by a couple of horses he was giving weight to. There could be runners from out of the handicap here, so Malystic’s course experience makes him each way value especially with Sam Twiston-Davies now taking the ride.

Our Listed 3m Mares’ Novice Hurdle Tips

Lunar Discovery

Ottizzini E/W

Gaye Legacy E/W

Lunar Discovery, Listed 3m mares' novice hurdle, Doncaster (2 March, 3:10)

After two good efforts at trips around 2m 3f in defeat, Lunar Discovery is the bet upped in distance for the Listed mares’ novice hurdle over an extended 3m at Doncaster on the Grimthorpe Chase card. Trained in Cumbria by James Moffatt, this seven-year-old daughter of Pether’s Moon stayed on nicely at both Haydock and Carlisle after a couple of Hexham wins.

So steep is the climb out of the back straight at the Northumbria venue that races there suit horses that want further. That’s precisely the case with Lunar Discovery. After chasing home Pawapuri on Merseyside, she went down fighting when giving 9lb to re-opposing rival Dontyawantme. Over a much longer trip and off level weights, Lunar Discovery can reverse the form and gain a deserved success.

Ottizzini Definitely Stays & Feared

Northern Irish raider Ottizzini scored unchallenged on Scottish Trials Weekend at Musselburgh over 3m, so there are no doubts about her stamina. Trained by Stuart Crawford, this seven-year-old Sea Moon mare came up against even stronger stayers like Princess Zoe and Brighterdaysahead earlier in her hurdling career.

There is nothing of their calibre or potential respectively in this line-up. Ottizzini concedes 3lb all-round to the field here, but may well be capable of doing so after beating the geldings in the Scottish Stayers Novices’ Hurdle the last day. Sean Quinlan is again booked for the ride.

Gaye Legacy Best of Rest

The remainder are much of a muchness to be honest. Gaye Legacy is another who has proven her stamina already, so may well run into a place. Trained by Tom Symonds, this six-year-old by Flemensfirth hasn’t finished out of the first two in her last four starts, winning a couple of those.

Gaye Legacy chased home Kyntara at Aintree and Martha Brae around Kempton before going one better at Newbury. She looked value for more than the length winning margin as she wandered around on the run-in. Connections have every right to pursue some black type in this with Gaye Legacy, then.

2024 Grimthorpe Chase Tips

Sat, 2 Mar 2024 , 15:40 GMT • Doncaster • National Hunt

Certainly Red E/W

Undersupervision E/W

Some Scope

Hidden Heroics E/W

Certainly Red E/W, Grimthorpe Chase, Doncaster (2 March, 3:40)

While he has the option of running in a veterans’ chase over the same trip at Newbury, Certainly Red would be a good each way bet if taking up his engagement in the 3m 2f Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster. Trained by Lydia Richards, this 10-year-old son of Midnight Legend has been in the frame for all but one of his four starts in the campaign.

Certainly Red split subsequent Premier Handicap winners Threeunderthrufive and Forward Plan when fourth in the Badger Beers at Wincanton on reappearance. He is now 5lb lower in the weights. Certainly Red has since one place better on two subsequent starts around Sandown and would now meet Java Point on 4lb better terms with just a length and a tail to find from the Masters Handicap Chase.

Undersupervision Back on Town Moor for Third Tilt

After finishing first and second in the last two editions of the Grimthorpe, Undersupervision cannot be discounted. Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, this eight-year-old Doyen gelding goes well here, but isn’t always the most fluent jumper. On both occasions he has completed this course and distance, Undersupervision ran off 132.

He is only 2lb higher in the weights for this renewal. There are as many letters as numbers against his name for form figures over fences, so Undersupervision comes with risks but there is no getting away from the fact his handler has had him primed for this in each of the last couple of seasons.

Progressive Some Scope Obviously Well-Weighted

It has paid to follow horses lower down the weights in recent years for this. Lurking low down in the handicap are the Great Yorkshire Chase third Charlie Uberalles, but also Some Scope. The latter is trained by Richard Hobson and has won his last two including here over 3m.

Some Scope, a six-year-old son of Telescope, saw his Catterick form franked by Twoshotsoftequila going one better at the North Yorkshire venue in midweek. After going up 15lb with the handicapper for that and then following-up on Town Moor the last day, he’s clearly progressing. Some Scope has been ridden in rear with typical confidence by Gavin Sheehan, who is again booked for the ride.

Hidden Heroics Pick of Skelton Pair

Although the stable jockey is on Ashtown Lad, Dan Skelton’s second string Hidden Heroics could have more to offer over this trip. This seven-year-old Coastal Path gelding has twice won over 3m 1f including off just 1lb lower than his current rating at Ludlow on his penultimate outing in December.

Amateur jockey Heidin Pailin is now down to ride Hidden Heroics and take 7lb off with her claim. Factoring that in, he may well be well-treated thanks to that extra reduction in weight. In a race where many are in with chances, Hidden Heroics could outrun his odds off just 10 stone.
