Epsom Oaks Trainers: Can John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien Dominate Again?

When looking at the best Epsom Oaks trainers your search should stop with John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien as the pair have shared the spoils the English Classic fillies race for the last 9 years.

You Have To Go Back To 2013 To Find The Last Non-Gosden/O’Brien Epsom Oaks Winner

If you are looking to find the winner of Friday’s Group One Epsom Oaks – one tip is to look no further than two trainers.

Quite simply, the best Epsom Oaks trainers at the moment are John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien as they’ve mopped up ALL of the last 9 runnings between them.

O’Brien has won six of those 9 renewals, including all of the last three, while Gosden has three wins since 2014.

The last trainer to win the Oaks that wasn’t Gosden or O’Brien was Ralph Beckett in 2013, with a horse called Talent – but a certain Aidan O’Brien did win the year before in 2012, so since 2011 we’ve only had three different trainers land the race.

Do Gosden and O’Brien Have Oaks Runners In 2023?

Yes they do. The stranglehold these two powerhouse stables have on the Epsom Oaks is set to continue this year as they both have big chances again.

Aidan O’Brien has the likely Epsom Oaks favourite in Savethelastdance, who is priced at 11/10 with the best horse racing betting sites, while Gosden has the next two in the betting – Soul Sister @ 11/4 and Running Lion @ 13/2.

O’Brien also has Be Happy and Red Riding Hood as Epsom Oaks runners in 2023.

John Gosden Has Won The Oaks Three Times

The John Gosden camp had to wait until 2014 to find their first Epsom Oaks winner when the Paul Hanagan-ridden Taghrooga landed the prize.

Since breaking his duck in the Classic, Gosden has added wins in 2017 with the wonder filly Enable and his most recent success was with Anapurna (watch below) in 2019. Frankie Dettori rode these two most recent winners for Gosden.

Aidan O’Brien Has Won The Oaks Ten Times

Aidan O’Brien is one of the most successful trainer in the history of the Epsom Oaks – winning the prize 10 times but is still three adrift of Robert Robson, who won the race 13 times between 1802 and 1825.

The first of the O’Brien Oaks wins came in 1998 with Shahtoush, with his most recent being only last year when Tuesday (watch below) got the better of Emily Upjohn in a head-to-head battle to the line.

Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore Have Also Won 6 of The Last 7 Epsom Oaks

With both Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore having strong links with the Gosden and O’Brien camps then it’s no real shocker the pair have top recent record in the race too.

They’ve won all of the last four runnings between them (2 each) and Dettori, who rides more for Gosden, even won the race for O’Brien in 2021 when Snowfall bolted up by a staggering 16 lengths.
