Epsom Oaks Runners 2023: Eleven Confirmed With Savethelastdance Heading The Betting
The third of the English horse racing Classics will be run at Epsom on Friday and all eyes will be on some of the best 3 year-old fillies in the Betfred Epsom Oaks where 11 horses have been declared to run (see full list below).
Recent years of the Oaks have been dominated by trained John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien, who have won ALL of the last 9 runnings between them and having the first two in the betting for 2023 look set to fight it out again.
O’Brien has landed the Epsom Oaks 10 times and has three runners this year with his main hope the Cheshire Oaks winner – Savethelastdance, while Gosden has Musidora Stakes winner Soul Sister and the improving Running Lion in a bid to land his fourth success in the race.

Savethelastdance will be all the rage to give trainer Aidan O’Brien his eleventh Epsom Oaks win and move nearer to overtaking Robert Robson (13 wins) as the most successful handler in the fillies’ Classic.
She was last seen bolting up by a staggering 22 lengths in the Cheshire Oaks at the Chester May Meeting and after that win shot to the head of the Epsom Oaks betting market. Prior to that win she also beat her stablemate Boogie Woogie by just over 2 lengths at Leopardstown.
Since that Chester win some have questioned what she actually beat, but regardless it was still an impressive victory and it’s easy to see why she’s the likely 2023 Epsom Oaks favourite.
This Galileo filly has, however, recorded all her wins to date with some degree of ‘soft’ in the ground, so those looking to take her on might cling to the faster surface on Friday as a possible reason to look elsewhere for the winner.
With Ryan Moore, who has won the Epsom Oaks four times before, riding she still rates a filly with a huge chance.

Soul Sister will be looking to give trainer John Gosden his fourth Epsom Oaks win and after improving to win the Musidora Stakes at York last time out has shortened into the likely second favourite for Friday’s race.
She was a surprise 18/1 winner that day but punters that didn’t back her will be looking back kicking themselves with a certain Frankie Dettori doing the steering that day. He will maintain his partnership with this Frankel filly on Friday too as Dettori goes in search of his seventh Epsom Oaks win in what will be his final ride in the race.
Last year’s Musidora Stakes winner – Emily Upjohn – was a close second in the Oaks, with the last horses to win both races being Snowfall in 2021 and Sariska in 2009.

This Roaring Lion filly was stepping up to 1m2f for the first time in that last race and now up again in trip could have even more to come. Yes, three of her 4 wins have been on the AW, but she showed last time at HQ that she’s just as good on the turf.

Eternal Hope will be flying the flag for the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin and after winning the Oaks Trial at Lingfield last time will certainly have her supporters too. That race was run on the AW track this year with the turf course unraceable and this will in fact be her first try on the grass from three runs.
William Buick rode that day and will get the leg-up again on Friday on this Teofilo filly that will be looking to give Godolphin their first win in the race since Kazzia in 2002.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and with Buick riding again – both will be hunting their first successes in this race. The last horse to win the Lingfield Oaks Trial and follow-up at Epsom was Anapurna in 2019.
