Yorkshire Oaks Runners in Irish Oaks Rematch on Different Ground

Rain fell at the Curragh during last month’s Irish Oaks and came just in time for Savethelastdance to get her ideal conditions. She was able to reel in re-opposing rival Bluestocking, who reversed the Royal Ascot result and placings with Warm Heart in the premier fillies’ Classic in the Emerald Isle. That is not the only form line to consider, however, as the majority of the field are older females.

The locally-trained Novakai completes the three-year-old Yorkshire Oaks runners engaged after a successful step up to this trip. Chief among her elders, meanwhile, are Nassau Stakes scorer Al Husn, who comes to the Knavesmire after that big breakthrough win at Goodwood races, and Free Wind for the Gosden stable.

Irish raider Rosscarbery has this as a major target for her wily handler Paddy Twomey, while Lancashire Oaks 1-2 Poptronic and Sea Silk Road come here as the next logical step. Completing the field is Pretty Polly Stakes runner-up Stay Alert, but let’s learn more about every filly and mare in the line-up…

Complete Yorkshire Oaks Runners Guide 2023

1. Al Husn

Improving Shadwell filly that has gone through the grades from a Listed success up at Ayr to Group 1 glory at Glorious Goodwood latest via an All-Weather Group 3 win at Newcastle races in-between. The way she shaped the last twice suggests further won’t be a problem. That’s backed up by her pedigree. One for the shortlist.

2. Free Wind

Group 2 course winner on reappearance that disappointed at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood on extremes of ground. Useful on her day, winning last year’s Lancashire Oaks at Haydock races on sole run. Heavy going against her over further last time out, but yard has won this four times. Obvious claims on pick of her form, but race terms favour younger Yorkshire Oaks runners.

3. Poptronic

Beaten on all three career starts on the Knavesmire, but better than ever when landing Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock latest. Turned tables on Sea Silk Road from Lester Piggott Stakes, but the prices on horse racing betting sites suggest she may struggle to do it again at this venue.

4. Rosscarbery

Versatile German-bred, Irish-trained mare once raced outside of the Emerald Isle on British Champions Day at Ascot races last autumn. Defended Group 3 Munster Oaks crown at Cork over this trip on reappearance. Unlucky fourth in the Pretty Polly down in distance and no match for Emily Dickinson in the Curragh Cup over further latest. Has had this as a target for the season, so commands respect among Yorkshire Oaks runners albeit giving weight to the youngsters.

5. Sea Silk Road

Beaten Lancashire Oaks favourite latest, but gained poignant success for trainer whose father-in-law the Haydock Group 3 was named after prior to that. Ran poorly on sole previous visit to the Kanvesmire when sixth in the Middleton on reappearance. Hasn’t strung consistent performances together in consecutive races for over a year. Needs a career-best.

6. Stay Alert

Group 3 winner at Newbury races over 1m 3f last autumn, then bounced. Came on for fifth in the Middleton here on reappearance with unlucky second in Group 1 Pretty Polly in Ireland latest. Squeezed out, but then rallied in the closing stages. Going up in trip augurs well, but this is even more competitive. Other Yorkshire Oaks runners appeal more.

7. Bluestocking

Career best when runner-up in Irish Oaks latest after hitting the frame on both previous starts this year. Listed Classic Trial second at Newbury before third in Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, which was a little disappointing. Turned that form around with Warm Heart on that one’s side of the Irish Sea latest, however. Has to be in the mix on better ground here.

8. Novakai

Runner-up in the Group 3 Musidora here during the Dante Festival on reappearance in May with the winner going on Oaks glory at Epsom. Disappointing foray to France in the Prix de Diane when only 11th, but stepped up to this trip at Newmarket races with taking Listed success latest. Relatively unexposed at a mile-and-a-half and could surprise a few Yorkshire Oaks runners with a big effort.

9. Savethelastdance

Three from four this year with each success coming on testing ground. Tapped for toe in The Oaks at Epsom races by Soul Sister, but showed she was all stamina when landing the Irish equivalent latest. She’s not a stronger favourite because yet to prove effectiveness on better ground. Forecast going the only chink in her armour.

10. Warm Heart

Galileo filly who progressed earlier in the season from a Leopardstown maiden win to Listed Classic Trial success at Newbury and Group 2 Ribblesdale victory up to this trip at Royal Ascot. Twice had the beating of Bluestocking, but saw past form reversed when a poor fifth in the Irish Oaks latest. One of the Yorkshire Oaks runners that needs to bounce back, but still capable of that on better ground.
