Gregory Clear Favourite from Small Field of Great Voltigeur Stakes Runners

No yard boasts a better recent record in this race than the Gosden stable with five victories since 2007. It’s for that reason, coupled with his Queen’s Vase win in this grade during Royal Ascot, why Gregory heads the market on horse racing betting sites for this assignment despite a penalty.

Two of the last five renewals have gone to Godolphin with Charlie Appleby saddling successful Great Voltigeur Stakes runners in Yibir (2021) and Old Persian (2018). He has narrow Bahrain Trophy scorer Castle Way in the line-up. This hasn’t been a lucky race for Aidan O’Brien, however.

1. Gregory

Unbeaten colt with stamina laden pedigree. Won Haydock novice over roughly this trip, then dropped back to land Listed event at Goodwood races before completing hat-trick in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase.

Alongside this, that Royal Ascot race has proven to be one of the best St Leger trials there is. Showed a really likeable attitude making most of the running and turned away challengers. The one to beat among Great Voltigeur Stakes runners despite a 3lb penalty.

2. Artistic Star

Highly-tried colt off the back of two minor wins last autumn and this spring. Good seventh in the Epsom Derby after Sandown success on reappearance and got closer to King Of Steel when third in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That run was slightly disappointing, given its relative weakness. Behind Continuous that day and Canberra Legend when only fourth in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at the Glorious meeting latest. Other Great Voltigeur Stakes runners appeal more.

3. Canberra Legend

Needed every yard of nine furlongs when landing Listed event at Newmarket on turf debut and reappearance in the spring. Listless ninth in the Dante here when never travelling and beaten three lengths into fifth in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot.

Much more encouraging effort when denied a clear run, but rallying into third in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood latest. Yard won this 12 months ago. On latest effort, he shouldn’t be the rank outsider of Great Voltigeur Stakes runners but does has most to find on official ratings.

4. Castle Star

Progressive this year after ending juvenile campaign with an impressive nursery handicap success. Landed a Listed event during the Guineas Festival at Newmarket races on reappearance, then followed-up in Group company in the Bahrain Trophy.

Some doubts remain, however, if he was the best horse in the race as the jockey dropped their whip on the head runner-up. Out of the same dam as top miler Palace Pier, so he’s one of the classier Great Voltigeur Stakes runners and respected.

5. Continuous

Yet to live up to promise of juvenile campaign when landing a Group 3 in France. Knows the Knavesmire from placed effort in the Dante on reappearance. Didn’t come on for the run when a poor ninth in the Prix du Jockey Club, but step back in right direction when runner-up in the King Edward VII Stakes at the Royal meeting latest.

Had Artistic Star in-behind that day and down the field was subsequent Geoffrey Freer winner Arrest at Newbury races last Saturday. With the form franked, has to be on any shortlist of the Great Voltigeur Stakes runners really.
